Chamber Adaptors
« on: October 26, 2005, 02:13:59 AM »
I am interested in picking up a chamber adaptor for two of my rifles, a 308 Ishapore and a M48 8x57.  I have the ability to cast bullets for these rifles and create reduced loads, it's just that sometimes I would like the convenience of being able to plink/practice with off-the-shelf ammo.

In my search I found two types of adaptors:  The first is a typical conversion adaptor, making a smaller cartridge, with a bullet of the same size as the barrel, fit the chamber of a larger rifle.  These adaptors can be seen at: http://www.mcace.com/.

The second type uses the .22 blanks for power-actuated tools and fires a small lead projectile (ball) loaded into the front of the adaptor.  These are sold at: http://www3.telus.net/gamegetter/.

I am hoping to hear from people who have had experience with either of these types of chamber adaptors and what kind of success they have had.

Thanks,
Jim

Jim B.  I have used chamber adapters from Ace Dube at MCACE for a number of years and they are just great fun and worth your while.

I started with a 30 Luger and 30 Mauser/7.62x25mm Tok for a rem 788 in 308 and had a lot of fun.  When I sold the rifle the adapters went with it and I picked up the same adapters for a 30-06 plus one for a 32 acp for the 06.  Great garden rounds for pests around the house.  You can handload those cartridges for a sub-sonic effect and still have a fairly hard hitting pistol round from a rifle barrel.

Even though the 06 is a 308 bore and both the 32 acp and the 30 Luger are 310 bore, they work just fine.  The 7.62 Tok round from the adapter in my M70- 06 is pretty hot.  I used a commercial hollowpoint to take a racoon at about 25m and it was verrry effective.

Some folks used to call chamber adapters 'sub-caliber' devices - whatever term you wish to use, they are effective, cost efficient, allow you continual easy practice with a big bore hunting rifle and offer a lot of fun and entertainment.  They are also a very effective means to train new, younger shooters to the rifle.  HTH.  Mikey.

Mikey,

Thanks for sharing your good experiences - that is just what I was hoping to hear!  Will the 30 Mauser adaptor also take the 7,62x25 Tok?  This would be great, but are the shoulders in the same position?

Jim

Jim B.:  The 7.62x25mm Tokarev round and the 30 Mauser are interchangable in my Tokarev and my chamber adapter.  I believe they are identical cases but there are some caveats about using some of the possibly hotter 7.62x25mm rounds in the older Broomhandle C96 Mauser pistols, unless you have one of the newly rebuilt ones from Mentor Arms (don't know if they are still in business) from Long Island.

I have also found that both the Sellier and Bellot 7.62x25mm and the Fiocchi 30 Mauser ammo shoot to the same ppoint of aim in my Tok and give about the same accuracy from both my pistol and chamber adapted rifle.  As I recall they both chronographed the same from my Tok.  HTH.  Mikey.
