Anyone own a custom made T /C barrel??
« on: October 24, 2005, 11:00:55 AM »
Hey folks, looking for some help. I'm considering purchasing one of E.A. Brown's custom encore barrels in 7-08. Does anyone have one of their custom barrels, and how is the accuracy in it. Am also considering other barrel manufacturers so please feel free to suggest another manufacturer.I'm looking for the good, bad and the ugly on all of them!  the help is greatly appreciated. :D

I won VV, Bullberry and tc custom. All are good and like all, you can get a bad one now and then. I feel that they aare al better that stock barrels. The new OTT will be my next. You will need to get trigger work done and possible a new hindge pin. Check back threads for more information.

I own two Fox Ridge barrels and wouldnt trade either one---------My 209x50 was a stock barrel from E.Arthur Brown and it is a shooter also.
My latest barrel(.257 Roberts)shoots subMOA!!!!
Mike in Oregon is selling stock T/C barrels that he goes over first to ensure accuracy-I may go this route for my next barrel-----Because I know there will be a next barrel!!!!!

I  purchased a 1" X 20" Bullberry barrel in the 223. I think they are one of the finest. They are not cheap by any means but well worth the money. Could not be happier. I am sure there are other custom barrel makers out there - that make great barrels - Bullberry is my only experience.

I believe that "custom" barrels from EAB are just barrels that came from Fox Ridge.....which make them basically factory barrels. I own several custom barrels.....VVCG, Bullberry and I have one on the way from MGM. Depending on who you are and your past experiences true custom barrels are either the best thing since sliced bread or over priced tent stakes. The fact I have one on the way should tell you what I think.

Thanks. please keep the opinions coming. According to their website, ea brown makes their "custom" barrels from raw blanks.  Anyone have different info? Also, what kind of wait times are there on bullberry barrels? are they in stock, or a one at a time order?

I have heard EABCO gets their custom guns from Fox Ridge-I do not know if it is true or not?????
Bullberry makes good custom barrels-Pricey but good.
Virgin Valley has been reopened by Steve(matchgrademachine.com). VV always made good barrels-again they are pricey also.
"The guy in Oregon" buys stock T/C barrels then goes over them(fixes throats and crowns as needed)He charges around $290 for these barrels he goes over------This sounds like a good deal to get a "almost" custom barrel for under $300.
Hope I helped you out????

So, only 3 reputable company's actually make barrels, and one guy goes over factory barrels and smooths out the rough spots. Is this correct?

The fact is that NONE of them actually make barrels. They (SSK,VVCG, Bullberry, Van Horn, MGM ) all purchase rifled barrel stock...blanks if you will. They chamber them, dovetail them, drill/tap them for mounts and sell them as barrels they "make". The blanks come from Shilen, Douglas or whereever.....people who actually "make" barrels.

Ah-ha. that makes more sense. so with all your guys and gals experiences, who has the best quality control on their barrels? I'm kind of leaning more towards a bullberry now that an eabco barrel.

i've had three total:
1. 300 sav. 14" from "ssk"
2. .22hornet 18" tapered from "texas contender"
3. 30-30 win. 24" bull from "texas contender"
sold the ssk to a bud who wanted it real bad! shot 1" groups and was great fun.
22hornet still have shoots sub-1" all day as long as you do your part.
30-30 sent to bullberry rechambered it to 30-40AI. still got. i love it! deer hate it! so far 3 shots...3 deer all neck shots and in the last 20 yrs i haven't needed mor than 1 shot. don't take runnin shots! haven't needed to! i hunt better, more ethical & more patience with age i guess! but it also helps knowing anatomy of the game hunted!

I have a 26" s/s tappered barrel made by VVCG for my encore. It's chambered for the weatherby 270 mag. It's just awesome. It will tear bullet holes all day with factory ammo

There's also a company called "ON TARGET TECHNOLOGIES" that's is making super accurate barrels for sometime now.  I have barrels from Fox Ridge, EABCO, VV & Bullberry.  But I think my next barrel will be from OTT.

Check out his webb site

Check with Match Grade Machine they have some barrels in inventory ( no wait time). I believe there were a couple of 7-08 barrels.

skb2706, Got a 21" 300 Savage Contender barrel from MGM couple of weeks ago. Getting around .5" to .75" groups with the first handload I tried. Already ordered another barrel from them for my Encore. Mike
