Mossberg 100 ATR .30-06
« on: October 22, 2005, 09:44:21 PM »
I picked up an atr 30-06 today and was wondering if you guys might have any experience with these rifles. I shot it once off of the front porch just to see how it handled the recoil and it was very mild but I didn't get a chance to go to the range. It's light and balances great and just has an awesome fit. Anyone else own one of these?? If so, how do yall like them??

I am actually going to go buy one of those new mossberg ATRs this weekend.... however thier price at walmart has jumped to 284 $

I am interested in thier stainless steel.... is that "real" stainless steel or is it a coating ?  (either way it goes, I have heard some very nice things about the rifle, yeh sure it may not be "real wood" but from far away, You can't tell the difference between that wood and real wood stock
Only problem is, walmart only sells them in Synthetic stock for the stainless steel , I wanted the "fake wood" stock with stainless steel, that would look nice........anyone know where they sell em here in michigan (other than walmart)

If you check out the other thread (It has "Mossberg at Wal-Mart" or something like that for the title) you'll find a few reviews.

I am quite pleased with mine.

I'm a bit behind, having just arrived back in town after a couple weeks away,  but I would like to comment on the ATR.

My wife bought me one for my birthday last year right after they started appearing at Wal Mart.  It shoots anything I put in it very well.  My groups are always on either side of an inch.  I reload, but havn't used any reloads in it yet.  I've shot Rem, Win, and PMP's.  All were 180 gr Soft points.

I'm considering buying another one with the simulated wood finish, as soon as I can see what it looks like in person.

I finally got to the range today. I shot about a half of a box of winchester 165 gr. psp rounds and had 3 misfires... the ones that fired grouped well at 100 yards.

I picked up a atr in 270 win, it was cheap it was $244.00. I got a good deal on an allright (IMHO) scope, simmons 4-12x40A.O. i ended up paying about 80.00 for it. Bought a set of quad rings from weaver, they look good and they seem to have worked on my other rifles they were about 10 bucks. Sling was about $12, just a nylon padded one, seemed to fit the general look of gun quite well.  Brought it home and screwed it together, quick bore sight. I was very happy with the fit and finish of the rifle, action worked smooth, scope set nice and low( A.O. just cleares the barrel by a few fractions of an inch). Took it to the range (actulay an old stone quarry) set up a target at 100 yards, shot off the hood of my truck (in driveing rain and sleet, with high winds). I was able to get 3 shots off before i could not see out of the scope anymore. I was happy to see that the first was about 1.5 inches high second was about 2 high third went right about 1 inch high and 1 inch to the right. I did shoot 2 more shots after the scope started to get full of raindrops they both hit about 3 high and 3 right. I cleaned off the scope as best could and went back to 200 yards shot 3 more times all 3 went about 2 inches low and about 2 inches right. I never even touched a clicker, and only used win 130 gain powerpoints (its going to be a deer gun).  i was more than happy with this shooting. I shot it again a few days later in better weather played with the clickers and had a better rest. Shot MOA with win 130's, 1.25 with rem corlock, about .75 with federal and hornady.I will stick with the wins just because I have 3 boxs full and they are cheap and easy to get.
I took it out deer hunting and did not see anything from my stand (no snow, deer are staying put)  went out every day, did not see a single tail. Finaly I see one running about 100 yards out( a week into season), it was broadside in the brush running into even deeper stuff when it suddenly quartered,  in front of about a one foot wide opening between trees. I had it in the scope and fired (the deer bucked up in the middle and i thought i had gut shot it). I went down to where it was hit and saw about a 5 foot spray of pink stuff and light red blood than the whole trail was covered in drops of blood. i followed about 30 feet and it was laying with its eyes open. Small buck spike horn about 130 pounds, first one i have ever shot. The 270 performed perfectly the bullet went in at at the begining of the lungs and came out right behind the far leg hit a rib going in broke 2 in the 2 inch hole on the other side. i was petty shocked when i took out the heart and lungs, they were completly liquified, had to pour them out of the cavity. This rifle was complethy worth the money. It feels right, shoots right, looks OK (for what it is). I am 100% confident that i can shoot well with it. 270 win obviously works well, EVERYBODY can't be wrong. lol
