NY Hunter;
I have to relate an incident that took place about a month ago.
As I told you earlier, I had purchased that Rem 7600 all weather ( ss & synthetic), but it didn't fit me well. So when my grandson , Jonathan and I  were down in my woods sighting in our new rifles, the new Marlin 30-30 fit me better...so we swapped.
That long reach for the slide was a bit far for my 5'8" frame..but it fit my nearly 6'4" grandson well...LOL
The Marlin sighted in well for me, but the 7600 gave Jonny fits...so he tried different scopes, mounts etc..
I was about to blame him..flinching etc.; and he was about to blame the rifle...
My othjer grandson Joshua (spec ops, sniper), Jonny's older brother was home on leave and we went to the woods for another sight-in session

By this time, Jonny was so disgusted, he had the 7600 stripped down to iron sights only...and I told him that  if he wasn't happy with the trade...I would retrade the Marlin back to him..

I recalled how you said the 7600 is an accurate piece..
...so while Jonny was condemning it, I said to our resident sniper Joshua.." Jonny thinks perhaps the rifle is at fault..because he has trouble holding less than 5" @ 75 yds.".
"Josh , I want you to try it with the irons and we'll see if the rifle is at fault."

I put a new target out on the 75 yard holder...Josh settled in on the bench and squeezed off two shots...collect the target...results,...one slightly elongated hole...
   I said " Jonny, it's not the rifle ! "

Learning this, Jonny buckled down to a bit of practice and has turned in some nice groups..

BTW...Josh's unit..task force Nassau, centered around the assault/amphibious ship USS Nassau is on it's way to Iraq now, having picked up some armored Humvees in Spain..
Since it is one of his specialties and they are air-mobil, it is possible he could have taken part in the operation yesterday where they did in that terrorist "safe-house" in Mosul and hoped that Zharchawie (sp) had been there..
Don't think it would have been his unit...but it could have been..

They expect to go directly into  "operation steel curtain"...upon arrival there..
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

I just bought a Rem 7600 in .35 Whelen. Here's a bit of a story:

I've never owned a pump rifle, so I looked around to find opinions regarding accuracy. I found a place that will "accurize" the 7600 for about $450.

When I asked what twist rate, what barrel length, they were using on their match grade barrels, they said "1:16, 22 in."

Same as the 7600 in .35 Whelen.

Besides stiffness, I don't know what improvement their accurizing treatment would give the 7600. I'll find out tomorrow how it groups when I sight it in.

Just as with bolt rifles, there are proven "tricks" to improve M7600 accuracy.  Of course the biggest improvement if you want sub-moa accuracy would be a better quality barrel and a precision chambering job; much of what comes out of the factories today is not that great.  Remington has a bad rep recently for off-center chambers in their rifles....but I digress.

One of the best accuracy enhancemets is a better trigger.  Since the M7600 has in effect a shotgun trigger, reducing the weight of pull, creep and overtravel can help practical field accuracy quite a bit.  I worked over the trigger on my trusty old M7600 and it is far better and more fun to shoot.  Another improvement is to square the crown.  Many factory crowns are off, and a simple recrowning can help accuracy.  These are the easy/cheap cures.  Others can include lapping in the locking lugs for even contact, shimming the barrel extension in the receiver for less movement, etc.

A lot depends on how accurate you need the rifle to be.  Good loads, a good trigger and crown should get you close enough to moa.  If you want a more accurate varmint rifle, then a better quality barrel may be in order.  While you are at it you might as well change to a .22-250 or .25-06 chamber.....

I just got back from the range and my goodness, what an ugly trigger this thing has! I won't make any declarations about accuracy until I get a trigger job, but it did seem to like Federal TBBC's the best. Remingtons were all over the place, but I have to wonder if that was me getting used to that trigger. I think Santa has a shooting rest/vise from Cabelas he's going to try to fit down the chimney and I'll get the trigger reworked before I go back to blow money on shells.

I HAVE to get into reloading...
