Bolt action 7.62x39 options-New rifles or Rebarrel projects?
« on: October 20, 2005, 01:30:44 PM »
I posted this some where else, but I wanted some info from my friends here at Greybeards.
My search continues for an affordable bolt action 7.62x39.
A friend pointed me in this direction:
http://www.tristarsportingarms.com/m10rifles.htm
Pretty cool, given a new production improved Enfield action-no surplus. However I have no clue what they would go for here in the US, let alone finding one.
Then there is this beaut:
http://www.cz-usa.com/01.detail.php?id=15
Though for me hardly affordable at the moment.
This is all the new bolt action production rifles chambered in 7.62x39 that I know of.
Anyone else know of any?
I would love if Savage would release one in the Stevens line, that would be awesome.
Then there is always the possibility of a project rifle. Many different actions to choose from. I have been told of someone that some how fit an SKS barrel to a Mauser action-I don't know how exacty true that is though. And leads me to questions about fitting.
Any ideas?

Ruger made the 30 Russian in the All weather version of the 77 MK II bolt rifle for a while. They also had a limited run of Blued/synthetic 77 MK II bolt guns a few years back. A friend has the blued version and it's a great shooter. Every now and then a used one is available on the 'net. MI VHNTR

I saw one of those tristar rifles sell on gunbroker for almost $800 ouch.

Go with the CZ you will not be disappointed I own one and love it + unlike the Rugers with their .308 bore the CZ is a true european .310 meaning that Ruskie ammo will actually shoot pretty good. Russian American Armory also lists one as does Charles Daly.

Thats right. I forgot that Ruger did a 7.62 M77. Heard mixed things about them too, I guess it was from the .308 bullet instead of .310
Charles Daly-It would be nice if they just made one chambered in a Mini Mauser Field Grade. Not only because of the price, but also it just seems fitting that one of the most toughest firearm (SKS and AK47) caliber in history be in a field grade, instead of a fancy stocked, gold trigger model.
Then again I suppose buying just the action is an option. What aftermarket stocks would fit the Charles Daly?

If you opt out for the CZ there is a guy who makes a magazine modification that makes the mag flush with the stock and really helps the appearance 100%. Kinda spendy at about 65.00 but, to me, well worth it.

Saiga has a bolt action in 7,62x39 listed to be imported on their website;
 http://www.raacfirearms.com/test/index.htm

With the sanctions being lifted on China we will see sporting rifles so we will see a bolt action in 7,62x39 too.

I guess these will have chromed lined chambers and barrels like all the rest of their guns have too. That means it can digest any surplus ammo wether its corrosive or non corrosive without and danger.

I have one other thought and maybe someone who has run into this may help out too.  Wasn't there a problem with some guns having .308" bores in their rifles made for 7,62x39 ammo and the imported ammo is .310" to .311" and the american made ammo is .308" and the imported rifles have bores for the .310"/.311" ammo?  I think this was talked about before.  You may want to consider this in your rifle purchase too.

I believe we are going to see bolt actions in 7,62x39 that will be very affordable  yet have the quality too thats what i'm looking for.

According to a thread over at THR, Remington might be importing products from Zastava Oruzje from Serbia.  Below is a link to the Zastava home page.  http://www.zastava-arms.co.yu/english/civilni.htm
This company produces a bolt action rifle in 7.62x39.  Looks good as well.

I would second the CZ rifle option.  Have a friend that has one - It is accurate and handy!  However, I would double check the bore diameter.  Think CZ imported US rifles use the .308 bore but it won't hurt to check.

The bore on mine slugged at .300 land to land and .3105 groove to groove.
Sort of a hybrid bore should shoot both biameters good.

I agree. Little on the heavy side though-8+ pounds, and the mag is pretty long too. I could see that getting in my way. But it would be interesting to see how well they shoot.
