Accuracy loads for custom 300 win mag
« on: October 16, 2005, 01:13:03 PM »
My wife of 30 years has been my accomplished big game hunting partner & really snapped me off with a custom 300 win mag for our 30th wedding anniversary! What a Gal!!! I would deeply appreciate pet-load, accuracy based reloading information for this type of rifle. I am still breaking in the 26" Krieger fluted match grade barrel in #5 contour, which is set on a Winchester Mod. 70 BDL post war action that was trued & lapped. The Monte Carlo stock is pillar bedded & the trigger reworking is truly outstanding. I am currently using up my stock of old reloads that didn't shoot very accurately in my other 300's, however, I am very impressed with the sub moa groups these "old" various loads are now consistently producing in this rifle & am anxious to make-up some real accurate hunting loads, which are known to work in premium match grade barrels for the 300 win mag. My Krieger barrel has a 1 in 11 twist, which I believe should be ideal for both "hunting & competition style bullets" in the 165, 180 & 200 grain range. I am new to this site but not new to reloading... Thank you in advance.

Sunny,

Congratulations, that's an awesome gift.

300 Win Mag in General likes H4350 or H4831 or H4831sc from my own experience and what I've read from many others, I think you'll find the same if you do some more looking around - although there are many who use H1000.   Bullet selection varies by your taste and available load data.

My Rem700 ADL custom likes the following, but does well with all the way down to 130 gr Barnes TSX up to 200gr from other manufacturers.

68.5 g H4350
WLRM Primers
Win Cases - Your trim length will vary
Nosler 180gr Partions, regular or protected point

5 Shots into .5 all day long if I do my part.    Regularly less than an inch from field positions.

maverick,

Thank you for your reply, which is deeply appreciated, further noting that your rifle is definitely a real shooter!  Your documentation is exactly the kind of performance I am looking for in my new rifle.  I will definitely look up loads using your noted H4350 & H4831 powders, both of which I have in stock.  Do you notice any difference in the Protected Point vs the regular Nosler Partition bullets in long range shooting?  My previous experiences identified a pronounced accuracy difference primarily after 200 yards?  Additionally, my records also identify impressive accuracy results when switching to/using Fed Match Grade Primers.

Try r-22 my model 70 shoots very well with a stiff load.
75 gr. r-22
180 gr. nosler part.
fed.215 primer
I think you will like it.

cowkiller -

Thank you for your information.  In checking my records, one of my other rifles, a BAR autoloader in 300 win mag had a preference for 74.5 gr of RL-22, 180 gr PP Partitions, Winchester cases & Federal 215M primers setback .020 off the lands...  definitely worth a try, maybe it will work in the custom rifle as well.  Thank you again -

Range update...

Thus far, my custom rifle will keep everything under 1 moa, usually around .75 inch groups, however, 10 old 180 grain Nosler Partitions loaded with 70 grains IMR4350 grouped all shots into one ragged hole about the size of a dime at 100 yards!!!  Haven't used chrony yet but I'm truly impressed...  Next week, if it's not raining, I'll use the chrony & try some Sierra boat tails with the IMR4350 & possibly H4350.

Qaz -

I'm not complaining... however, that was only at 100 yds now it's time to move onto 200 yards & beyond.  In the past, I've noticed problems whereby certain bullets would not stabilize properly at all distances...  I just enjoy raising the bar...
