Gunshow, Savage 99 and a 307
« on: October 15, 2005, 10:09:24 AM »
Just got back from gun show and saw some 99's from $275 to $625.  I'm planning on picking one up sometime, just trying to learn more about them.  the calibers were 300 savage, 243, 308 and a 250 I believe.  Is there a "model" that is of more value/ better craftsmanship than the others?  I saw a mode "A", one without any mode #, some model E's, a detatchable magizine type, and a model "F".  I assume the "A" is the earliest and possible the best??

The 307 was a new model Winchester with a "extended" muzzle brake.  $425, Is this muzzle brake from the factory, as it seemed like it was done right, but I've never heard of a muzzle brake on these leverguns before. Thanks.  bg

After I inherited a M99-R circa 1950 I have noticed that there are very few M99's that are unaltered.  Most if the ones I have seen at shows and gunstores have been cut up to install recoil pads.  Others have the barrel cutdown and many have the scope mounting holes drilled right through the top mounted rollmark.  Very few unaltered M99 Savages remain out there as far as I can tell.

This is my opinion.  Your opinion may vary.

To keep things simple, it reads like any s/n under 1,000,000 and a rotary magizine, and a  schnoble forearm are really what people like about there 99's.  I know I saw a few that fit this and its tempting to head back out there tomorrow with a bore light and get one in 300 savage.  Anymore comments appreciated.  Thanks.  Bill

Majbg: if one of those 99`s was a .250 give it a hard look. .3oo`s are very nice and condition is everything when your looking to buy a Sav 99.
  Good luck.
