300 remington ultra magnum, whats best rifle ?
« on: October 13, 2005, 01:34:02 PM »
Hey guys, this is my first time to this site and it seems like a nice place to post a question to everyone:

I am looking to getting a 300 remin ultra magnum caliber, but I am not sure which rifle to get, some say "go with remington 700" other say go with something else.  I underestand that the 300 RUM is not a popular caliber with some of the big gun compaies like browning ( I don't think any browning rifles come in 300 RUM) or even Benelli.

But with whatever is out there on the market today, whats a good rifle (good meaning good durability and good accuracy) in the 300 RUM ?

A little about my self, I have been shooting 30-06 for the past 3 years, I don't go hunting but I go to rifle ranges alot (anywhere from 100 to 300 yards) and I enjoy the sport, kind of a hobby.  Last week, I shot with my friend's dad's 300 RUM and feel in love with it (after 15 shoots you start to notice the heaving kicking and pounding it does on your shoulder but its all good)
any help would be appreciated it,

thanx guys

First off, Welcome to Graybeard Outdoors! :D

To answer your question, I don't think that there are many choices in .300RUM.  I have one in a Remington 700 BDL SS.  I can't tell you how it shoots because I haven't even shot it yet, but you really can't go wrong with the Remington 700.

Now, I've got to ask....why a .300 Ultra Mag?  For me, I got one because of two reasons: 1) I succumbed to the (then) super duper magnum popularity hype, and 2) I collect (or rather accumulate) different cartridges.  Can a .300 Ultra mag really do that much more than a regular .300 Win Mag?  Nope.  Yea, it may shoot a little bit flatter and hit a little bit further, but I really can't shoot beyond 300 yards anyway, so all that stuff doesn't really help me.

Still, if you  really want a .300 Ultra, then get a Remington 700.

Zachary

Welcome to the forum but I have to wonder why you want a .300 RUM for punching paper?

honestly, I underestand what your saying, its way too powerful of a rifle to be punching paper with it, but I have always been a big fan of big powerful rifles, I mean I am not saying a .50 BMG, but something that packs a little punch  :-) ..... I think 300 RUM is the biggest Im gonna go, and you never know, my friend is begging me to go with him elk hunting (even though I don't think there is any elk here in michigan),

I was lookin into the remington 700 sps 300 RUM (looks like an OK gun, its fully senthetic which I heard its supposed to take a good punishment), I prefer to have senthetic stock over wook simply becuase its a little cheaper, but what do you guys think ?

I think you’re nuts! ;)

OK, I can understand the allure of a big boomer.  I hunted elk for over 20 years with a 7mm Mag with perfect results every time I pulled the trigger.  Then I got a .45-70 and followed that up with a .300 Win Mag.

The Marlin .45-70 my “Rhino Blaster” handloads (460g hardcast @ 1812fps) wins the “Big Boomer” contest hands down, but it’s a chameleon – with my plinker loads it is very inexpensive to shoot and recoil is about half that of factory .30-30 ammo.  This is also my most “fun” rifle.

In the last two years I have picked up a couple other rifles, a Marlin .30-30 and a Ruger .257 Roberts.  Both of these are low recoil.  Maybe its just my age showing, but I like to SHOOT my rifles, not look at them.  I have to admit I like the gentle ones a LOT.  (That said, I worked up my .45-70 “Rhino Blaster” loads, at 48 foot-pounds recoil, without benefit of a recoil pad, just the hard rubber thing on the back of the Marlin.)

By all means, get the .300 RUM if it tickles your fancy. Scratch that itch if you must!  If you handload or are independently wealthy, ammo costs won’t be an issue.  But my guess is you’ll never shoot it like you would a ..22-250, 25-06, .30-30, .45-70 or a host of other chamberings.

BTW, your .30-06 will handle elk with ease.

There is nothing wrong with the 300 RUM, yeah the ammo is a little more expensive (unless you reload) yeah it has a little more recoil, but so what.
If you enjoy shooting the 300 RUM go for it. Personally I would go with a Savage even though mine is a 700 BDL.... :D

nasem - Welcome aboard!  :D I've got te same rifle as Zachary and it's an awesome cartridge! I replaced the factory stock with a McMillian stock had it mag-na-ported and put a Leupold 4.5x - 14x scope on it and its just deadly out as far as I'd ever dare to shoot. Zachary is right though, one of these days I'd like to sell it or swap it in for a nice .300 Win or better yet a .300 H&H. Good luck with your search. CEJ...
If I can't take my rifles with me, I don't want to go!

I just recently got my 300 Rem Ultra Mag. It a BDL Remington. I shot it a couple times at the range with 180 gr bullets at 3225 fps.
and each time my group was within 1" at 200 yds. With the 150 gr bullets at 3400 fps at 100 yds it shot a 3/4" group.  Its a great rifle. :D

Savage 116
« Reply #9 on: October 14, 2005, 06:54:18 AM »
I have a stainless steel Savage 116 in 300 RUM. It comes with a factory muzzle break that you can turn on and off. I replaced the Savage synthetic stock with the Bell and Carlson DuraMax stock which improved the looks and accuracy of this rifle. I'm getiing 1/4" to 3/8" three shot groups with this rifle. It's incredibly accurate. I reload and load 180 grain Nosler Ballistic tips for paper punching and 200 grain Nosler Accubonds for a hunting load. I can also load 180 grain Nosler Partitions for hunting. I really enjoy this rifle.

Reloading
« Reply #12 on: October 14, 2005, 10:22:46 AM »
It was the cost of the ammo for my 300 RUM that motivated me to reload. I can reload for my 300 RUM using premium bullets for under $10 per box. I'm getting outstanding accuracy by reloading for my 223, 243, 22-250, 25-06, 30-06, 300 RUM, 8mm Muser, 303 Brit and saving money on reloading for my MilSurps and two hand guns.

Go ahead and get a Remington 700 in 375 RUM like me.  The kick is strong but growing up shooting it not bad at all.

Yup, if you've got an itch, scratch it. That is some kind of cartridge! The ultimate in flat shooting. If you want to ENJOY shooting your RUM, find a rifle that weighs 9 or 10 pounds to help soak up recoil (or use a lead sled) You aren't going to be very popular if you put a muzzle brake on one - shooters on either side of you will wish you'd go somewhere else. For large and dangerous game, get a bigger bore with heavier bullets

I have two Ultra Mags The 338 and the 300 The 300 hasn't got that much recoil that I can't handle it but my 338 RUM has a brake that I take off when I use it for hunting. The 300's around 40 ft lb of recoil the 338 around 48 ft lbs of recoil.
They are both Remingtons Rifles wouldn't have it any other way. :D

What is a lead sled? I heard several people talk about the lead sled. I also heard about some insert into your stock. What is it? :D
