I think youre nuts!

OK, I can understand the allure of a big boomer. I hunted elk for over 20 years with a 7mm Mag with perfect results every time I pulled the trigger. Then I got a .45-70 and followed that up with a .300 Win Mag.
The Marlin .45-70 my Rhino Blaster handloads (460g hardcast @ 1812fps) wins the Big Boomer contest hands down, but its a chameleon with my plinker loads it is very inexpensive to shoot and recoil is about half that of factory .30-30 ammo. This is also my most fun rifle.
In the last two years I have picked up a couple other rifles, a Marlin .30-30 and a Ruger .257 Roberts. Both of these are low recoil. Maybe its just my age showing, but I like to SHOOT my rifles, not look at them. I have to admit I like the gentle ones a LOT. (That said, I worked up my .45-70 Rhino Blaster loads, at 48 foot-pounds recoil, without benefit of a recoil pad, just the hard rubber thing on the back of the Marlin.)
By all means, get the .300 RUM if it tickles your fancy. Scratch that itch if you must! If you handload or are independently wealthy, ammo costs wont be an issue. But my guess is youll never shoot it like you would a ..22-250, 25-06, .30-30, .45-70 or a host of other chamberings.
BTW, your .30-06 will handle elk with ease.
