im finally gettin over to my huntin place in mississippi to do some squirrel huntin. i was wonderin what would be the best tactic for goin after the little boogers right now?? the weather is goin to be sunny. in the mid 50's in the mornin and gonna get up to the mid 80's in the afternoon. i talked to one of my friends that lives over there and he says that the trees leaves are still pretty thick. there are lots of red pecan trees over there and a few hickory trees and a few oak trees and a bunch of huge cotton wood trees that they love to eat and hang out at. what would be my best tactic for gettin em. should i just sit and wait under some of the big cotton wood and red pecan trees or should i walk through the woods real slow or should i sit in a stand?? should i use any calls? ive got the bark call and the baby squirrel in distress call that ill bring. what would be my best strategy?? thanks!

Well, first of all we hunt on the oposite ends of the Mississippi. I prefer to use my scoped .22 and I do a lot of sitting. I find a good location with lot of feeding sign and sit. I carry a little folding stool that slings over my shoulder, I'm old and like comfort. Try to sit quietly for 30-40 mins. before moving. Move as quietly as I can watching the tree tops, about every 15 steps lean, against a tree for 3 or 4 mins. scanning the ground ahead of me. Right now everything is green and leafy so it is harder to spot them. I also use a small pair of binoculars to search the trees for them. I use calls to answer them, makes them give away their position sometimes. I hope you have some great hunting, great to see another dedicated squirrel hunter.

where in mississippi are you in? our place is just outside of tunica right on the mississippi river. i love shootin my squirrels but it seems like i can never be really patient with them. i dont know why. so i ususally just walk around slow and quiet and look and listen and i try to call sometimes. do any of yall think that they would still be responding to the distress call since now there babie have sort of grown up?? thanks!

Sit and wait on their food source. I've been twice, just because my JRT was about to go crazy, long summer ya know! I've seen 4 and took 1 shot, MISS, too many leaves on for us right now. The dog seems content for now!!

just got back from miss. earlier. shot 3 squirrels. one of em was black!! i been goin after this guy for 4 years and i finally got him!!! i took him by the taxidermist on the way home today. im gettin him mounted sitting on a tree limb with a pecan in his hands. since i shot him out of a pecan tree i thought that fir the bill just right!!

thanks magshooter!! turned out the best way for us to get em was to walk the road that surrounds a huge corn field (about 40 acres) that is out in front of our lodge. (their food source i suppose!!) we had walked through the woods around big pecan trees and saw or heard nothing! and on the last morning we decided to walk the edge of this field and it turned out great!

Finally enough leaves off so the dog doesn't think I'm a complete idiot. Starting to take a few when we go. Looking forward to Jan and Feb when the woods are bare.

Since I just turned 50, you got me scared when you say your "old and like comfort". Can I ask how old you were when you started noticing it?
