Author Topic: Wanting opinions of the Stevens Savage .30-06 . Also gerand (Read 461 times)

I'm looking into buying a .30-06 rifle, and I don't have alot of money. I was looking at the Stevens Savage .30-06 that's going for about $270 and wondering what you guys think of it , I've searched all over the net for reviews but can't find any. Also if you have any other suggestions for a .30-06 in about that price range I'd like to hear about them.

And finally, a friend was telling me about what he said was the best .30-06 you can get, that costs about $550 used. I believe the name he used for it was a Gerand. An older semi auto. Any opinoions on this one?

Welcome to GBO.

I have owned three Savage bolt actions, one in 270 and one in 7-08 and one in 223. All three were very accurate. I would assume a Savage in 30/06 would do the same.

I've never owned a Garand, but it's been referred to as the greatest battle rifle ever. I bet your friend is a WWII vet. http://www.garandcollector.org/

I wouldn't recommend a Garand for hunting applications. A bolt action would be a much beter choice.

Tell us what you want to do with the 30/06, hunt, target shoot or ... ?
Maybe we can give you a better answer.

Well prety much more of target shooting, I doubt I'll go hunting. I'm only really considering the Garand since its a semi auto, it would be cool, but then with .30-06 ammo the price it is, I don't think I would do all that much rapid firing.

There was one other thing I didn't understand about the Savage 30-06, was how you would attach a scope, I only saw one little 1 inch segment that looked like a mount, in front of the bolt, but wouldn't it requite 2 of thise mounts to get the scope on sturdy?

i have a Stevens mod.200 in 308 Win. and i like it a lot it is light and accurate i am sure the 3006 would be as well

The Savage/Stevens bolt actions have holes predrilled in the receiver ring (where the barrel screws in) and the bridge (where the bolt handle contacts). These holes are filled with short screws that need to be removed before mounting the bases that the scope rings attach to. The rings encircle the scope and hold it in place. The predirlled holes aren't always lined up perfectly, but there are adjustments on the scope that make up for that. There seem to be as many makers of rings and bases as there are makers of automobiles. The Weaver (one of the least expensive) are among the best although some folks think they are ugly. These people usually thing the Savage/Stevens firearms are also ugly.

$550 Garands are generally guns made up out of parts or are worn from use. A shiny new one from somemaker like Springfield Arms will set you back in the neighbohood of twice that.

All respect due the Garand, they were awesome rifles and continue to still be. I hear of some awesome things with the old WW ones and also the new production, It really is a great design.
Yet for your application you would probably be better off just getting a Savage or Stevens 200. Lighter, just as powerful, and -given Savages continued reputation for out of the box accuracy, and new Accu-Trigger-most likely more accurate than a $550 Garand.
If it's a semi-auto 30caliber rifle you want, then why not pick up a Yugo SKS? About $140-180 in new condition on the net. Not as powerful as the 30-06 , but mad fun....not to mention very cheap to shoot.

Carl,
Since you are going to be doing more plinking/target shooting and want to keep a tight budget, why not take a look at one of the Mauser Mil-surps in 8mm. I'm thinking about one of these as well since the ammo is fairly cheap and the rifles can be had for fairly low cost as well. 8mm is fairly close in muzzle energy to a 30-06 though if my recollection is correct, it is not a distance shooter like the 06.
