Question about Buffalo Bore's 35 Rem. ammo.
« on: October 08, 2005, 07:33:54 AM »
Has anyone ever used Buffalo Bore's 220 gr. JFN 35 Rem.? Does it really get 2200 fps.? I currently use Remington's 200 gr. Core-Lokt ammo in my Marlin 336CS. For deer I think the Core-Lokt's work great. I was thinking about seeing how the BB ammo shoots in my rifle to use for black bear and wild boar hunting. If I was to use it on deer will the bullet expand enough for deer or is it made to penetrate more then expand? If the BB ammo is capable of the velocity and energy they advertise I think it would work really good for what I want to use it for. Any thoughts, thanks ???

I've not shot this particular Buffalo Bore load but I have shot a lot of Tim's loads. If he says it's doing 2200 fps then from a 20" Marlin barrel it WILL do 2200 fps. I've never seen his loads fail to live up to stated velocity yet. He doesn't use cannister powders available to us all but non cannister powder available only to ammo makers.

That helps and I'm sure he has had the load pressure tested to be safe in Marlin rifles in good shape.

For deer, hogs and most game you'd use the .35 Rem on the 200 RN is all you need. But if I were hunting moose, big bears and such regularly I'd sure give it a try.

Their web site also says their getting Per Box of 20 $39.99

For $41.98 I can buy 3 boxes of 20 Remington 200-gr Core Locks at $13.99 each.

If I gotta have that 220 gr. JFN 2200 fps 2364 ft. lbs bullet, I'll load my own, and SAVE lots of $$$$

I understand what you're saying as far as cost go's. I don't reload yet (been saying that for years!). If I try the BB ammo and it shoots good in my rifle I'd just stick with it and use it exclusively. Once I "sight the rifle in" I'd only fire a few rounds through it before the season starts to make sure its still shooting right. A box of ammo would last me a few years. I don't plink with this rifle thats what my AR's for! :-D

Will the JFN expand on deer or is it made for tougher game? If it won't expand on deer, it really won't do me any good. I'm worried about this more then the cost!

Will it expand on deer? Probably. But don't buy it as a deer load. If deer is what you plan to hunt just buy the standard 200 RN stuff. You'll never need more and in my opinion it will actually do a better job. The 220 grain Speer FP bullet was actually intended mostly for the .356 Win. and is a little hard for the .35 Rem. But started at 2200 fps it will expand OK to at least 150 yards even on a target as thin skinned as deer.

But on deer it really offers no advantages to offset that high cost. If you used the rifle primarily on heavy thick skinned game like big hogs, bear, moose and elk I think it would be worth the cost if you're a non reloader. But not for a deer hunter. And the 200RN will work fine on all of those other critters too. But I do admit Tim's 220 is superior for the really big heavy thick skinned stuff.

While I agree that the 220 may be a bit tough for deer if the velocity is too low, here is what Speer says on page 361 of their Number 13 Manual:

"Speer's 180 and 220 grain HotCore bullets, designed for the .35 Remington..."

This bullet was discontinued for several years, and was brought back for the .356WCF....you be the judge.

I'll stick with the round nose design of the core lock... those 220-gr BB looke like they were designed for a box magazine rather than a tube.

Besides my .35 Rem is my back up, in case my 45-90 fails me

Nope, the 220 Speer flat nosed bullets are recommended for the .35 Remington and the .356 WCF - both tube magazine rounds....see post above.

Has bullet performance pictures
The .35 Remington Bullet Performance Part 2

The bottom line is what kind of performance you getting with the bullet your using.  For me its the Remington 200-gr Core Lock.

Tim from Buffalo Bore Ammo e-mailed me back on Saturday (10-08 ), I didn't see it until last night!. He said the 220 gr. JFN 35 Rem. will definitely kill deer, but not as "dramatically as the cheaper, slower  200 gr. stuff." (in his own words) as I would get over penetration on deer.
