S&W M-58 .41 Custom Revolver
« on: October 07, 2005, 06:55:33 AM »
Check out this S&W M-58 .41 magnum  Military & Police that has been convered to a 2.5" snubby and a K-frame round but with Pachymar grips.

http://www.gunsamerica.com/guns/976545081.htm

I wonder how much it would cost to have Smith do a special run of .41 Mag or .44 Mag N-frames with fixed sights and 4" barrels or perhaps 3" barrels.  Personally I would like L/K frame grips, but maybe that's too much to ask.  It's just that the L/K frames have so many different grip options and they seem to be able to be made to fit any hand size comfortably.

I guess you could have a 4" barrel because you could shorten it  as much as 2.5" as did this custom gun in the link.  I think it would be really cool to have a .44 fixed up the way this guy did this old M-58 .41 mag.

Anyone else have any thoughts?  If I found a "money man" who would finance a special run of these, would any of you be interested in getting one?  Just trying to take an informal poll here.  I got this idea while I had insomnia last night and even now, hours later, it seems to make some sense.   Your thoughts?

Check this out:

Look around a little and you'll find quite a bit about the "new" run of .44's.

Thanks for the responses. I found out about the new run of .44 Specials with fixed sights.  It's a special "Thunder Ranch" (Whatever that is) edition of guns w/ 4" barrels and a price tag of almost a thousand dollars. I was thinking of something like from 550-700.00 as a price range for a modest, no frills M&P N-frame revolver.  Make it with a 4" barrel to facilitate shortening to 2.5" or 3".  I really find 3" barrels to be idea for handiness and good shooting qualities.

Again, many thanks for the links to other sites.  One of the things I've always loved about this site is the (1) friendliness of the people and (2) the tremendous breadth of knowledge and experience here.

:cb2: Looked at the 4" .41 Mountain Gun today. If I didn't already have a terrific shootin' 4" M57 I would have had to buy that.

What really caught my eye was a new .44 Special. I'm gonna have to look that one up on the S&W site. I've never seen it before, and it really looked sweet!

Because the M21 has been such a big hit S&W is now doing a "plain" version for $100.00 less. They are now also doing the M22..same gun in .45 ACP/AR. The first run sold out before anyone knew they were around. Next run is due out in a few weeks. I sent S&W a note via their website thanking them for making the M21 and M22 and how about doing a run of M58s with the same nice slim barrel.

Got to shoot a friend's M21TR at a bowling pin shoot last night and it did shoot nice....but I am a .41 person and will just pray that they make one in .41....

That is one cool little gun!

Not $1300 dollars cool (to me at least) but I'd snatch one up in a heartbeat at <$700 with factory trigger and no frills.

Hey Old Griz,

What loads do you like in your M57?  I've got one on layaway for when I redeploy to the world and can't wait to take it out on a deer hunt.  Mine is a 6" stainless and I'm thinking of having it refinished to satin or bead blasted so it isn't as eye catching.  I've got a Marlin lever gun in .41 right beside it.

:cb2: Hey Scout. We're in the process of moving, and I haven't been checking the forum like I usually do.

The best factory round in my M57 is the Winchester 240-gr. Platinum Tips. The Winchester 175-gr. Silvertips were a close second. I haven't killed anything other than paper with my M57, but since shot placement is the key, I'm sure either one of these will do the job quite nicely. I've got mine and two speedloaders loaded with the Platinum Tips, and unless they prove ineffective somehow, I'm sticking with them.
