For $30.00  you can get a set of redhead hearing enhancers that cut out at 85db.    Carbine length 30 06 should be worse than a .308 20'' and none of my friends have refused to hunt with me, especially those toting magnums.   :D

308 WIN short barrel
« Reply #31 on: January 07, 2006, 06:28:23 PM »
Hello there. I have an Interarms Mark X Mauser action rifle with the full stock and flat bolt handle and I suspect the barrel is no more than 20 inches in length. Nice handy rifle for hunting for sure. Adrenaline fuelled moment I never really objected to the blast my ears took while deer hunting. At low light however I believe the flash would be quite spectacular but in hunting situations the short barrel lenght suits me fine. I also hunt with a Tikka Master Trapper M695 chambered in 6.5 * 55 and it too has a short barrel but the handiness and accuracy of the gun outweigh any concerns I have about blasting report and terrific muzzle flash. I do wear ear protection when sighting in and at the range practicing. Regards

Hi All,

Pardon me but since when has a Recoil pad been lighter than the wood you remove to fit it?

Fitting a recoil pad will increase the weight of the rifle  and NOT reduce it.

With short barrels rifles if you handload you can reduce the muzzle blast/flash by using faster burning powders. This is what I do with my BSA CF2 Stutzen which has a  20" barrel

I hunt with a Steyr Mannlicher full length stock carbine in .270 Win. The muzzle blast doesn't bother me while hunting. But I do wear ear protection during sighting in and target practice.
Now the muzzle flash is something else, it's massive.

"If I measure approx 2", by holding my thumb and trigger finger out in front of me, (____________________________) I just cannot understand why two inches longer, 20" - 22", would make any rifle easier to carry, point or aim. 4" maybe but not 2". But since I like all my rifles to have 22" - 24" barrels I don't worry about it. "

The Model 7 I think the poster referred to has a thin, whippy barrel that doesn't balance well in my opinion.   3 more inches of a thicker walled barrel is enough to make the gun stay stable more on the bench and offhand in my opinion.    I have bull barrels and the 20" and only know what I feel.

Fitting a recoil pad will increase the weight of the rifle and NOT reduce it."

You are right.   It will not make it any lighter.  Only shorter and less felt recoil due to the (hopefully) better pad.
