Wildcats we want manufactured...
« on: September 29, 2005, 08:52:49 AM »
Earlier this month I had started a topic on what manufactured cartridge we thought we could do without. Thanks for all the great responses!

Now lets think in the opposite direction... what wildcat cartridge do you think should be more available?; i.e. manufactured.

If this is a topic that has been repeated over & over, we can kill it now. No harm, no foul.
If not...

This time, I'll go first...
.224 Texas Trophy Hunter
.250 Humdinger-it does have sharp shoulder angles (45 degrees) which is probably why most AI-types are not mainstream. But, it is a cartridge with advantages.
The secrets to life? It’s faster horses, younger women, older whiskey and more money!

I really have to stretch to think of a wildcat that offers me much practical advantage over what I can already get commercially, especially in bolt guns, but there are two wildcats that have held my attention over the years:

7-30 Waters – Looks like a great little deer cartridge
7mm STE – Looks even better than the Waters

I strongly considered rechambering my .257 Roberts to an AI configuration right after I got the rifle, but once I got to play  more with the standard chambering with +P pressures I quickly lost interest.

It would be interesting to see Marlin produce something based on the 450 brass – a 7mm-450, .30-450, .35-450 or .375-450.  Should be able to get some pretty interesting velocitiesÂ…

The next question is, would I BUY any of the above?  Maybe, but probably not.  If I canÂ’t get it done with what I have now it probably doesnÂ’t need doing.  There are two more cartridges I would like to have n a bolt gun, a .308 and a .338 or .375.  The .308 would be for a variety of purposes but primarily for use on the metallic silhouette range at the NRA Whittington Center which is about 3 hours south of here.  The .338 or .375 would be mostly for Alaska.  Doubt IÂ’ll ever get to Alaska on a hunting trip, but thatÂ’s no reason not to buy the guns.

About the only two I can think of I might actually spent my money on would be a .257 Roberts AI and the .280 Remington AI and then likely only if offered in Remington LSS Mtn. Rifle configuration.

6.5-.284

but in an action length between a short action and the 30-06 length action. Just long enough to seat the bullets out a ways and take advantage  of the .284 case capacity. It would also be a great action length for the .257 Roberts, 6.5x55 and other Mauser based cartridges that do no quite fit in a short action and are too short for a 30-06 length action.

I know it's not a wildcat, but I'd like a factory bolt gun in 358 norma mag. I know it won't happen with short mags being popular and it's a 35 after all. Maybe I'll find an action and rebarrel it??

I want to build a 358 Norma in a #1 .Next year I'll have the money to put in it.It's a cartridge I been thinking about for a while.I was going to build it on an m77 to go with my new 350 Rem. Mag..I finally found a place to get a 358 Norma round for my cartridge collection. It might not be a wild cat,but no one I know has one.Jaydub in WI if you get yours built first let me know what it's like.

6.5-06, 6.5-.284,338-06. I know A-square is making the 338-06 but I would like to see the pace pick up and see a few factory chambered rifles produced. I think a H&R handy rifle in 338-06 would be great!

.25 Souper - They have necked the .308 case up and down to just about everything else, now it would be nice if they necked it down to the one they should have started with!
I will also second the 6.5-06, more bullet weight and S.D. in common bullets than the .270.

Two wildcats I would like to see in a production rifle are:

6mm-284
TAC 20

I wouldn't have a problem with either of the 6.5mm choices(6.5-284
and 6.5-06), either.

A-Square is also making correctly headstamped 6.5-06 brass, but at $30 for 20, I'll continue forming my own. My second vote goes for the .338-06, at all bullet weights, it is only 200 fps slower than the .338 Win Mag, without all the headaches of belted magnum cases. Besides, I got lots of .338 bullets!

The .25 Souper sounds better all the time.  The .308Win. is quite the accurate case.  25 calber bulets would have plenty of oomph for deer, and recoil would still be rather moderate.  Yeah, sounds good.  Best wishes.

That 7mm STE sounds like a good 'un to me, trouble is there aren't any suitable bullets other than the 175 grain round noses.  :?

6.5 mm IHMSA and 7mm IHMSA

Commercialization of these 2 would revolutionize Hunter Class High Power Rifle Silhouette shooting.

6.5-06!

I agree.  I have a .260 Remington, and it's a great little cartridge.  My .264 Win Mag is also a great cartridge, but a long action standard case like a 6.5-06 would be my pick.
