Rifle idea, need advice
« on: September 28, 2005, 02:26:48 PM »
Hello everyone,

This is something i have been kicking around for awhile, just never had the money or time to really put any effort into it....Until now

I have always wanted a nice short barrelled varmint/target rifle, that is handy rugged lightweight and very accurate, without going broke to do it.

having a synthetic stock, bull barrel or semi bull 20"-22" long and using a rem 700 or model 7 action.

The problem i have had is the barrel length, for a .223 is 20" long enough to get this done, i know that AR's and mini's have short barrels. And also what rate of twist would one use.

Im not asking to shoot at 1000 meters just 300yds or less at coyotes etc.
is this a foolish idea or should i just make it how i want it to be.

just looking for a place to start.

thanks

Dave

I can't think of any factory bolt actiion rifles that have a bull barrel and are only 20-22" except for an AR. You can pick up a good flat top AR for as little as $599 or if you didn't mind a sporter barrel then I would look at this Remington for $450, you could take a little extra money and put whatever stock you wanted on it.

From the sounds of what you are needing then I would really give this rifle a look. I know it's not a bolt gun but thought you might want to see it anyways.

A 1-9 twist rate on the barrel is a good all around twist which will allow you to shoot a variety of bullets. A twist such as a 1-12 will keep you down in the lighter weight bullets.

I already have a mini 14, love it, just wanted something in a bolt action, that was short handy and very accruate to any reasonable hunting range.

I really have never liked the AR's just not into em,  this isnt something i need it is something i was gonna build as a project, just to have a gun that was built for my tastes.

Remington already makes the exact rifle you are looking for. I think they call it the LVSF. Metal is SS, barrel is fluted and sorta semi bull in configuration with a nice synthetic stock. Real nice light weight walking varmint/predator rifles.

the gray one nailed it. apply scope of your choice, say a nice 6x, and you're good to go.
