SS and laminated - who makes a good one?
« on: September 28, 2005, 08:20:15 AM »
I thought for sure I was going to buy a Savage (due to $$), but the wife gave me the go ahead to spend a little more if need be. What do you guys recommend in a SS and laminated bolt action?

Thanks

Bill

Remington of course. Love my LSS Mtn. Rifles. If you want one in 7-08, .260 Rem., .270 Win. or .30-06 I can sure highly recommend the LSS Mtn. Rifle. If you want a magnum chambering they have that too but I think it's called the LS.

In order, Tikka, Ruger, Howa.  Just make sure it doesn't come in a green box.

These were already suggested and I agree.

Both are absolutely beautiful, just remember to replace the factory trigger with either a Timney or Rifle Basix before using it!

1. Remington 700 LSS - 30-06
(stainless/gloss grey laminated stock, 24" barrel)

or

2. Remington 700 Mountain Rifle - 7mm-08
(stainless/satin brown laminated stock, 22" barrel)

Remember if you get a Remington, which are still pretty good rifles, you must do a trigger job and probably bed it before it will do what the Tikka does out of the box.  With Tikka you need no bedding and definitely no trigger job if you have an allen wrench handy.

I would like to check out the tikkas, but I am having trouble finding a dealer near me (Lansing, Michigan, area).  What is the average cost of one?

Call your local guns shops, just because they are not listed as a dealer does not mean they can't get one. Cost depends on the rifle you want, but they are reasonably priced.  :D

I've played with the Tikka's at Gander Mtn in K'zoo while visiting the outlaws, bet the Lansing store has them too. I ended up buying one but haven't had the chance to try it out yet. Soon, very soon.

Luck,

BT :D

I called my local shop and he can order a T3 in .270 for $695. He also has on a hand a package deal of a .270 Ruger SS/Laminated with either a Leupold Rifleman or VXI (can't remember which he said) for $785. How do those prices sound?

Sounds like a very good price. Tikka and a Leupold, great combination.  :D

That sounds a little on the high side.  I bought my Tikka Laminated SS in .25-06 for $575 about 2 years ago.  I went to gunbroker and found some for over $695, so I guess that the prices have gone up.

The price has gone up. 2 years is not a good indicator of todays prices.  :D

The Leupold Rifleman or VXI are neither one very good scopes optically.  They are overpriced and there are much better scopes than these two for less money (Burris FFII is one example).  These are the two worst scopes good ol Leupold makes and tries to sell at a premium.

ditto

I'd go back to the Savage in BVSS with pillar bedded stock, ss barrel and not have to do a trigger job and spend the recouped $ on quality glass.
