shot the 200 this weekend
« on: September 26, 2005, 06:13:27 PM »
I finally got a chance to shoot the Stevens 30.06 this weekend. This is the one i told you all about that came with a simmons 3x9x40 for $239.I only had 50 yrds but from a kneeling position all three factory 165gr loads were within 3/4 inch and about 1 inch high.Looks like whomever boresighted it did well.I bought a camo sleeve for it,made the appropriate  holes for bolt, sling, ejection port. We're ready to go deer hunting.

how did you like that recoil from that stock that weighs an ounce and a half? lol

i only have a .243 and was surprised how much it smacked me...seems that stock design or weight...or something...tranfers recoil right through ya.

did you notice that too?

Matt,
I didnt think it was so bad.Im used to a 300wsm or 45-70.My gun with scope and sling comes in at 7lbs.I decided not to paint it for now and will try to get by with the H.S. Specialities camo gun sock.I actually like the little rifle.I bought it as a cheap rifle to use for the season but i may end up keeping it more than a year. Lol. Its a joke with my friends,i seem to buy and sell alot with all my toys.I could be a consumer reports tester and get paid for it.Now that im getting married im told i may have to tone it down a bit and keep some of my toys for several years.Well,if that means i can go to Alaska for honeymoon next May,i guess i can sacrafice for a few years.hahaha

How was the trigger?   I know it is not the accu trigger, but apparently adjustable.   Painting is easy and fun.   If at first you don't succeed, paint over!
For fun target practicing,  you should try the recoil management loads.    They work just as advertised on targets.   1/2 recoil, same (approx) POI.  Haven't used them for game yet.

Does the model 200 only come with a synthetic stock?  I'm getting up there in years now and am concerned about the recoil.  From what I've read it sounds like like another winner by Savage.  Best wishes.

As for now it only comes in synthetic stock. As far as the trigger goes,i found it ok for my needs.I've never been as picky about rifle triggers as i have about revolvers.I'm not into any serious long-range shooting-its perfect for my needs but i hear they can be tweeked a little.

mine was really easy to adjust...took about 2 minutes. you remove the stock and turn the barreled action upside down and loosen the silver screw by the trigger two or three turns until it feels right. then put the stock back on and you're done.

Would I be accurate to suggest that Savage is using the Stevens brand to sell its non-accutrigger rifles. If that is the case, think folks buying them should be pleased.  I would think that the move will signal an increase in base price for Savage. They probably want to compete head to head with Ruger, Remington, Winchester, Weatherby Vangard, etc.

Exactly.

I replaced my Stevens plastic stock with a Bell & Carlson, it's great. Of course, between that and putting on a varmint countour barrel, it's awfully heavy.
