Thinking of New Rifle
« on: September 24, 2005, 09:58:16 AM »
Just got back from the Dallas Gun Show and some guy was selling bullets for reloading for 50% off.  Wish I had gotten there earlier, as they were well picked over, but was able to get some for my .270 WSM, 25-06, and 22-250.  Heck I figured since I had the brass, dies and whatnot for the .243, I would buy some 6mm bullets also.  Well, I did, and then I thought, hey I sold my .243 barrel for my T/C and now I think I need to buy me a new gun.  So, here is a chance for you to help me out.  I don't want to spend an arm and a leg, as I've already done that this month.  I've got a Leupold VX-II lying around in the safe that needs a rifle to call home.

Seeing you didn't include the Weatherby Vanguard I voted for the other.  Next to the Vanguard I would get a Savage.  The Vanguard Sporter I picked up has the smoothest action of any rifle in it's price range.  The Burris scope just arrived the other day and hopefully I'll get to the range soon and see how she shoots.  Lawdog

When I go to buy a new bolt gun my list begins and ends with REMINGTON. You mean someone else still makes bolt rifles? Why?

GB, i was going to ask you before....have you owned/shot a winchester 70? why (if you dont) do you not like those?

i handled one today that balanced and fit me just about right. i really liked the design too. the 700's dont fit me very well and so i havent bought one.

just curious...

i know youve had great experiences with the remingtons and that would be enough for me, if i were you, to continue buying em.

what about other brands? what did you not like like about tikka or sako or winchester or maybe browning?

If money is an object, get the Stevens, next either a Savage accutrigger model or the Vanguard.

If you want to spend more money for a rifle that is about the same  accuracy but looks prettier, get a R...R....R...R...Rem, or Ruger.
God, Family, and guns, in that order!

I prefer not to pay $400+ for a bolt gun especally for it to come with a plastic stock and a paukerized finish.    especally when other makes shoot so well. :D

Hate those stupid safeties. If they would get their act together and make their safety operate more like the rest of the rifles of the world do I'd consider one. Until then I won't.

No argument here on the plastic stocks. Hate them. Real working guns to me have laminated wood stocks and SS metal.

bet it gets hot in a hurry too. too bad they did that stupid WSSM crap, or they would have enough of my respect to buy one. dummies.

After buying a vanguard 3006 and replacing the stock, trigger i was very surprised how well this rifle shot this past weekend. The bullet holes were touching and 3 out of 5 shots were in the center and all i could say is wow.

hi There,

Simple because the Big Green lost it's way years ago, the only remington i would buy is a rela good condition Model 30 or 30s, I suppose the 700 could make a boat anchor ................... if I had a boat that is

Now as for the rifle this fellow wants to buy ........... well now get the one that YOU like and that feels the best to YOU   my likes and dislikes may not match yours, heck there's enough folks like Greybeard who still buy Remingtons   but then again it takes all sorts! :?

:-D Of course there are other companies making bolt action rifles.  Gee Graybeard, you really need to get out more. :-D

The reason there are other companies making bolt action rifles is simple.  Other companies make better, more accurate rifles and have service departments that will do whatever is necessary to make you happy should there ever be a problem with one of their products.  Maybe someday Remington will re-learn this and get back to thinking of their customers wants and not just the stockholders pocketbooks.  Then they might start making a quality product again.  Lawdog

You guys must not behave yourselves when talking to Remington. I've not needed their customer service a lot of times over the years but when I have they've never even considered letting me pay one red cent no matter what was needed. Even on the USED rifle I bought that they gave me a new stock for. FREE of charge.

Some day maybe I'll be where we can shoot together and you can try to match the accuracy of my Remingtons.

I own many brands of rifles, but I own Tikkas and Remington more than any other, and I like them in that order.

I have never had any quality issues with either Tikka or Remington.  Oddly enough, the only quality issue I had was with Kimber (which is well known for their quality).  Fortunately, I DO know that Kimber's Customer Service is EXCELLENT.  I sent the bolt on my Kimber Montana and it was fixed and returned within about 10 days - that's just incredible!

I must say that my other pick would be Sako, but Sako (like Kimber) is a $1,000+ gun, as opposed to the Remington and Tikka, which about half the price.

Well, this morn I called around to several places, intent on buying a Savage .243.  Called Cabelas, Sports Warehouse, local Wal-Mart and even Bass Pro.  Not one single 243 in store....Broke down and went back to the Dallas Gun Show, taking my Remington 22-250 VSF with me in case I wanted to trade or sell it.

Well, wound up trading it and $50 bucks for a Remington 700 VSF in 7mm-08.  GB would be proud....About to load some up and stick a Swaroski on top and head off tomorrow to see how it shoots.

Thanks to all who had comments and voted.

I would put my new .270 Savage 110 LH project up against ANY bolt action with a sporter weight barrel and many heavy barrel benchrest rifles.
This is from a guy that was a dyed in the wool Remington man for many years. The accuracy they deliver for the money is just amazing.

I've owned and shot a lot of Remingtons over the last 30 years or so. I haven't ever had a quality control issue with any of them. I have dealt with their customer service dept a few times and always had good luck with them. There has been some crap from Big Green over the years (597), but overall some very fine firearms. I saw the new bolt action .22 at a gun show last weekend. It looks great. Classic lines and style. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

I agree with Lawdog. Remington's customer service people screwed me over big time. I'll never forget it. The next rifle I bought was a Tikka. It didn't need any customer service. Best rifle for the money that I ever bought.

I like Rems but their customer service is ruining the company.
