Author Topic: Traded my 375H&H for a 338 Win Mag. (Read 557 times)

My buddy wanted my 375 H&H since I bought a 416 Rigby. He had a Browning A-bolt that is glass bedded and a muzzle break installed and a trigger job and is stainless steel which is what I wanted for my Alaska trips. We swapped guns so now I am playing with the 338 Win Mag. I already have a 300 Win Mag and the 338 is close in comparison to the 300. But I do like the fact of the heavier bullets for the 338. When I gor my 416 Rigby I did not see the need for the 375H&H even though I think it is one of the great rounds.

So what is you thoughts on the 338 Win Mag.

I wouldn't have made the trade. I don't care for stainless or brakes BUT if you're happy with the trade that is all that counts. Lawdog

My thoughts on the .338? It is a cartridge whose appeal I do not understand. The .300 Mag? Absolutely. .375H&H? Tops! .416? Great round.

It is no better on non-dangerous game than the .300, and not nearly as good on DG as the .375. Maybe you simply had a fondness for the rifle?

Well the 416 in my opinion works better for my needs for dangerous game over the 375 H&H. I may still go out and get another 375 H&H just to have one.

In my opinion the 338 has a little more to offer in the bullet weight area over the 300 Win Mag.

I am a blue gun with wood guy. But I just felt a need for the Stainless with a synthetic stock. It is one of them redhead step childs in my gun safe. :-D

I'm a blued metal and wood guy too, Redhawk... but I will admit that there is a certain appeal to the synthetic stainless set-up. I like the utilitarian aspect of it.

As for the .338... a little more lead is always better than a little less, but for the game I think we're talking about a 220 grain Weatherby Magnum usually does the trick.

I am sure I will replace it. It gives me another reason to buy another gun for the scope I have in my gun safe.

I have been wanting a 375 for a while, I ran across a good deal on a A-bolt stainless stalker in 338 so I bought it. Seems like a good gun. I will still end up getting a 375 later down the road

I am thinking the same thing. I have been looking at the Sako's, Winchester's and Ruger's. Or I might just get a Ruger M77® Mark II Deluxe Magnum in 416 Rigby to take over that duty of my Encore in 416 Rigby and it will cure my itch for another 375H&H.
