What Hunting Implement do you favor most for whitetail
« on: September 19, 2005, 04:10:57 PM »
With the rapidly approaching early archery season I am looking for your favorite tool for harvesting whitetail deer in NY State...I know that many of you are multiple season hunters but what really gets your blood flowing?  We all have a favorite...I know that I do.  If I had my choice I would spend the entire hunting with my compound in the relative quiet that the bow season affords.  But when the guns come out I feel that I need to take up arms and head out with the gun toters...I still like my bow but the guns are a close second...Especially my Ruger Super Blackhawk Hunter in 44Mag.

What do you think?

I had quietly backed off deer hunting the last few years...One of the reasons being that I don't care for shotgun hunting . I enjoy the precision of a rifle.
I'm not condeming shotgun hunting, if you enjoy it..more power to you,
I just prefer rifle.
Nope, I don't hunt pheasant, turkey,  ducks, geese or anything else that requires a shotgun by law.
It appears by the poll that I'm not alone, since the percentage preferring slug gun is very small.
I presume we will see a dramatic shift toward rifles in these southern tier counties recently opened to the rifled variety.
Naturally, I am prepared..been waiting for it ..

Bow season is awesome, but I have to say, my favorite part of deer hunting is grabbing a hunting handgun, and hitting the woods with a couple of friends.  Quite often, 2-4 of us will hit an area, and put together a plan, and bump some deer towards each other.  We don't drive deer so they leave the area, we just try to get them up out of their beds.
The cold November air!  The feel of wool clothing!  The comraderie!
Praise the Lord, and pass the ammunition!

Since I've only hunted with a shotgun, I guess thats what I prefer.

I guess I am from the old school. I like to hunt with my t/c hawken flintlock the most. It gives me that old timer feel.

T/C Encore handgun in 7mm-08 with 15" barrel until this year when I will be able to use my Marlin 30-30 for the first time since NYS approved the long overdue use of rifles in many southern counties.  Deer herd down but expectations are always high.

I agree with you...I would like to own a flintlock some day...I just need to find a left handed model...Something about that flash pan lighting up right in front of my face makes me a little nervous.

It should wny. My father in law is left handed and he shot mine. The pan flashed his eyes good and he burned his forearm not too seriously. I tried to tell him but what does the young son in law know.
