As a handloader I dont like em because of the fact that they limit your seating depth to whatever the people who degsined the mag saw fit to give you. I also find it hard to believe that a 1/2" shorter bolt throw would make any kind of diffrence in any real world huntin situation.
 But I'm curious as to what the general concensus is so please vote!

I like them. They make for a slightly stiffer action. But then again I like long action too so. It's all good.

The shorter the cartridge the more inherently accurate they are.  Just ask the benchrest crowd, they’re the ones that proved this.  This is due to more uniform burning of the powder because it’s packed into a shorter column which burns more efficiently.  Actions that are shorter are also stiffer which leads to less flexing during firing.

As a reloader that owns .243 Win., .308 Win., .270 WSM, .25 WSSM and a .223 WSSM(not to mention other short cartridges) I have to disagree with this statement.  I am able to seat the bullets to the depth that I want to for optimum accuracy.  Lawdog

I have had and still do have several short action rifles as well as several long action rifles.  I understand that competitive shooters prove that they are more "inheritantly accurate".  But to me I have had just as many long action rifles shoot well as short action.  A few oz of weight is meaningless to me as is a shorter stroke of the action.  The difference is so little as to not exist in my experience.  I know that for hunters it is another topic to talk about but in real world, day to day hunting and shooting activities I can go either way and not feel that I am gaining or giving up anything going any way.  

After all, how many stocks have you broken in a long action that would not have broken in a short action . . . for me none.  I have never broken a stock.  

How much smaller of a group do you shoot because of the short action vs a long action.  I have a 280 that is the most accurate rifle I have ever shot.  

How many animals have you missed because of the fraction of a second it took for you to bolt in a long action as compared to a short action? If that is the case use a semi auto or a pump action.  But for me it again has been none.  

I really don't see that either one gives me an advantage over the other.  I just like em all.  If it shoots and its accurate I like it.

With many scopes a short action is easier to mount them on without extension rings. I sure wouldn't want a long action for a short cartridge.

If they work for you, great.  I will stick to the long ones.  I just never got excited about them. I have heard good things about the short actions. We all have out reason for what we like.  :D

I voted "I like and feel they serve a purpose" but I've never made a purchase decision because of a rifle's action length.  If I like the rifle I buy it - period.

It seems kind of silly to screw a .223 barrel onto a .30-06 action...

I'm pretty sure my heavy-barrel Ruger .22-250 VT is a short action, although I'd have to open the safe to be sure...  But it shoots GREAT, so who cares?  

My Savage 110E in .22-250 was a long action - but it shot great too and the only time I gave the action length a second thought was a) when I was considering an after-market stock, and b) when I was considering rebarreling it to a different cartridge.

I like short action just because they look better and feel better. The same reason I like a slightly shorter barrel. I have never needed a "fast followup" second or third shot. I certainly have never boken a stock. I like smooth lines: no hinged floorplate, no detachable mag. I would be content with a single shot bolt, that is where the best accuracy is, then there is no OAL problem. Make the first one count and you won't need another one.

I like short actions.  There is nothing wrong with long actions, I just prefer the shorter fatter cartridges and believe they have greater accuracy potential.  It is reasonable to believe that the shorter action should be stiffer than a longer one.  And any weight saved is a plus.  I guess the main reason is that my favorite cartridges are all short, with the exception of the 6.5x55, and it would be silly to house a .223 rem., 22-250, .243 Win, 7mm-08 or Winchester Short Magnum in a long action.
