Why do most sportsman not like a blind magzine in a bolt gun ?
I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.

They take more time to safely unload. I could live with a blind mag but I like a hinged floor plate much more. In a bolt action I believe I'd rather have a blind mag than a detachable one.

One thing to consider is a rifle with a blind magazine like a Savage or Rem 700 ADL has a stronger stock since the stock has no hole under the action.

billy,

I prefer my bolt actions to have hinged floor plates.  In fact all my rifles have hinged floor plates.  If they came without I had them changed over before shooting.  I believe you will find the most bolt actions shooters prefer hinged floor plates.  Lawdog

You know I never use the floorplate to unload a bolt gun BUT for some reason I don't like blind mags either, I guess it's because they just look kinda unnatural.

I'd prefer a detachable mag and stripper clips.

I prefer the drop out clips myself...faster to load, safer to unload... I Have 2 of the Savage 110CL and love them...have an older short action 110 I just had rebarreled to 260 Rem that I have picked up all the parts to convert it...I always have a spare clip but have never lost one...in short, I didnt realize how much of a pain in the rear a blind magazine was till I picked up the old 110...make mine a clip...just my thoughts...WW1

Maybe it's because the first couple rifles I ever got were blind magazines, but I prefer them to hinged floorplate or detachable mag's.  Of course you have to be able to cycle the bolt with the safety still engaged.  Makes for a stiffer, more accurate stock; but, I'm not enough of a marksmen to realize the difference.  Probably only matters to benchrest shooters who I s'pose only shoot single shots.

Is it just me, or does anybody else have a hard time getting the darned floorplate and spring back in and closed?

I think the Browning A-Bolt is the best design, a hinged floorplate with the detachable magazine held in place by a spring clip.  If the A-Bolts had three position safeties they would be everything my heart desires (in a gun that is).

Give me a removeable "clip" anytime.   Faster and painless.    I have picked up enough shells out of the dirt for one lifetime.

Most of my rifles have a hinged floorplate also, But sometimes I run them threw anyway. It all in how big a rush I'm in.

i like the simplicity and slimness of a blind mag in bolt guns.
just how convenient does unloading need to be? or how fast? just thumb 'em out - no need to use the bolt - and put 'em away.

I really like my detachable mag on my rem 700,my rem 700 adl -06 has an enclosed mag with no floor plate and it can be a pain in the but to  unload without chambering the rounds.

Blind Mag Conversion
« Reply #13 on: September 28, 2005, 06:15:45 PM »
Hello there. I have a M 70 Westerner '06 and it has a blind mag. Is there such a thing as converting this rifle to one with a hinged floorplate? Regards

It's done all the time.  My advice is to take your rifle to a couple of gunsmith's and get estimates on converting it over.  Lawdog

I won't buy a rifle with hinged floorplate. Detachable mag. only.
I have different mags loaded for different shooting siuations. I like the flexibility without the hassle of unloading thru the floorplate as the rounds seem to end up somewhere on the ground.

Get a Browning A-Bolt, it has a  hinged floorplate with a detachable mag, and your rounds won't go all over. I love my Brownings.  :D

Have had one rifle with a blind magazine and still have four rifles with tube magazines – same basic problem on both kinds.  Have to admit I much prefer the floorplate design, am ambivalent toward the detachable mags.  With the levers I have learned to unload them without fully chambering the rounds, but its tedious work.  Much prefer the Marlins with the Cross-Bolt Safety for the unloading task, although I have both kinds.

The key is “DonÂ’t be stupid”.  Came back from a long day humping the mountains one day, totally exhausted physically.  Got back to the truck and unloaded the Ruger M77 by working the bolt then emptying the magazine via the floorplate.  Pointed the muzzle into the dirt about 20 feet away and dropped the hammer on the now empty chamber.  Except the chamber wasnÂ’t empty.  Had mindlessly closed the bolt after extracting the chambered round, thereby chambering another one.  Guess my exhaustion was part mental, too.
