Damaged bore....advice needed????
« on: September 12, 2005, 02:12:14 AM »
I recently bought a new rifle with a stainless barrel in REM .223 caliber
After firing 25-30 rounds of remington accutip thru it i noticed that on cleaning it  the patch seemed quite tight about halfway thru the barrel.
On examination i saw what looked like a piece of metal projecting from the rifling,on examining the patch/jag/cleaning rod i noticed that the stainless rod was scratched presumably from the piece of metal in the bore!!(put another patch thru and another scratch on the rod!!)
I have had the gun back to the supplier and they have had a look at it and say that it looks like i have damaged the bore with a cleaning rod!
Now i am no gunsmith but am very particular with my rifles and have never had any problem before(7 other guns)the rod is a kleenbore stainless item designed for .22-.45 caliber and was not cheap or inferior quality,it remains as straight as a die,the jag is made of brass and the patches were all pre-cut
I fail to see how even if i tried to i could gouge the bore halfway up with this set up.
can anyone offer any advice or opinions????
thanks guys

When I have a problem with a product, if it isn't corrected to my satisfaction at the first point of contact, I write a letter directly to the CEO of the company.  State your problem simply without hysteria nor anger.  Certainly no threats.  More like WE have a problem and what can WE do to correct it.
Middle and low level mgment often don't have the authority or guts to correct the problem and are often more concerned with counting beans than anything else.  A supplier would have no corporate alligences at all.
Corporations are very aware of what good public relations are worth and what a powerful consumer tool cyberspace is.
Above all, until this problem is taken care of, don't try any home remedies as that may affect any warrenty you have.

 If the gun was purchased new, talk to the dealer you bought it from.  Explain the problem ans ask if he can work with either the distributor or with the manufacturer to correct the problem.  most distributors and/or manufacturers will do everything possible to please a consumer.  One dis-pleased customer out there bad mouthing them can cost more over a period of time than it would to replace/repair the gun.

As stated above, be a gentleman (or at least act like one) when discussing the problem with them .......remember the old saying about catching more flys with honey.

If the rifle is not a semi-automatic, I would take it to a gunsmith that has a bore scope and have him take a look and suggest a cause. If he suggest anything other than cleaning rod damage, I would have him write what he found and send the story to the manufacture and ask for help. If it is by chance a semi-auto, you may be seeing the gas port, which is visible and will catch your patch. It should not be marking your cleaning rod though. Are you using some sort of bore protector and cleaning from the breach? Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

i intend following your advice and getting back to the manuafacturer......the distributor and the gunshop have showed no interest at all....they sent me a letter saying it is just a mark in the bore(my stainless cleaning rod has scratches to the contrary!!) and keep shooting it and it will probably go away!!
i;ll let you know how it turns out.
thanks again.
ps it's a bolt action,not a semi/auto

Others have given you good advice. My call would be to the gun maker. When I deal with them, I keep the tone on a good level and you would be amazed at how helpful they will be.  :D  Keep us informed.
