Mountain Rifle
« on: September 10, 2005, 12:51:37 PM »
I found a nice Remington Moumtain rifle in 257 Roberts caliber. The rifle is built on a short action and I am concerned that this may limit me regarding cartridge overall length. I would appreciate any input on this. Is the 257 Roberts really appropriate for a short action or would a long action be better?
Thanks,
Don

I am by no means a gun tech, but I would guess that if it came that way from the factory, it should be fine for you. Maybe others no more. Good luck if you get it, I never shot that round before. Jack.

The maximum cartridge overall length for the 257 Roberts is 2.780", and that should fit in a short action with room to spare.  Of course, you can still seat the bullets out as far as the magazine and the chamber throating safely allow, which is a bit over that length in my Remington mountain rifle.  I'd snatch that rifle up, if it looks good.

I have experience with only one Remington .257 Roberts. It was an ADL limited edition rifle made one year only I presume. It would not allow factory length ammo to fit in the magazine. I never fired it. Just took it to a dealer and dumped it.

I actually had some intentions of turning it into an AI but when it didn't even have room for factory length ammo in magazine I kinda got turned off by it. Didn't feel like sinking a lot of bucks into then.

I suspect Remington would have fixed whatever was wrong but it was enough to change my plans.

Guys, thanks for the inputs. The asking price is $550 which includes rings and a Redfield scope. It is in excellent condition and less than 4 boxes has been fired in it. Does this price sound to be about right?
Thanks,
