The .30/06 Springfield And I'll tell you why.
110 grain bullets to 3400fps for those 600yd. woodchucks
150 grain bullets to 3100 fps  for Deer Antelope Caribou
180 grain bullets to 2800 fps for 200-300 yd Elk sized game
220 to 250 grain bullets  around 2500-2600 fps would even get the job done on those big bears.
Just thought i would share that with you guys i was sitting around doing nothing this mourning  and was wondering which rifle i would pick out of the closet if i could only have one and i picked my favorite. Later Tanoose

You must have a 26" barrel on it to get those 150's to 3100 fps. The 30/06 is a great gun you can hunt alot of different animals with it. My 06 has a 26" barrel also.
My favorate rifle is my 300 Win Mag. :D

Who ever heard of going through life with just one caliber, even though you have picked the perfect one for it.

Versatility is one of the .30-06's strong points.  There is no need to buy a whole new rifle to pick up extra fps and knock down power.

When I finally decide to cash out of my life long collection I wlll keep three for myself.... a .22, a 12 gauge Shotgun, and a .30-06.  Which is probably all I ever needed to begin with.

:D All of us had to start somewhere, and most likely didn't have the funds to rush out and purchase one of each caliber..................in that case, the 30-06 is an excellent choice of first gun.  Its kinda like first wife, no matter how bad they actually were, there is always something you love about them.

A sporter 03 was my first "deer rifle".  I still have her today, she hasn't been fired in 30-35 years, but still has a position of respect among all I have acquired since then.

My absolute all-time favorite has, and always will be the 7x57mm Mauser. I have used it on elk, antelope, mule deer, whitetail deer, wild pig, javelina, coyote and even a wild turkey in Texas. I have only one load, a 160 grain bullet traveling at 2,815 fps and slipping three shots into a triangle less than a half-inch large at 100 yards. Tom Purdom

I got my first 2 rifles on the same day. A old 8mm Mauser and a Winchester model 70 in 30-06.  I bought it from a widow that was selling her husbands guns. Within a week I bought a 444 Marlin and a Marlin in 30-30. I was hooked.  :D  :-D  :-D

I agree the .30/06 is hard to beat, but since I had 3 older brothers and they were using a .30/06-.308 and a .300 Savage when I went out to get my first rifle, I wanted something different, and came home with a .270, so I tend to lean that way as my favorite. Jack.
