Savage Model 111GL :price question and other questions.
« on: September 05, 2005, 06:30:20 AM »
Hi:

Well, since I am a lefty, I thought I would take one more look at the bolt action rifles for the upcomming Deer season. I was all set to buy the Winchester Model 94 Legacy in 30-30, but the left hand thing is what is giving me second thoughts. So, I was looking at the Savage website and their brochure.  and this is what I have found.

1. a Savage model 111GL I can get in the 25-06. It is flatter shooting than the 30-30. Good for the rare long shots.

2. What is your opinion of this rife and caliber?

3. Does anyone have this model rifle?

4. I can get it for about $409.00 before taxes are included.       is this a good price?

5. Does this rifle come drilled and tapped for scope mounts?

6. Is there any other place that is lower?

thanks,

C-trapper:

1. a Savage model 111GL I can get in the 25-06. It is flatter shooting than the 30-30. Good for the rare long shots. -
25-06 is no question hands downs better for the long shots, a check of ballistics tables will confirm this.

2. What is your opinion of this rife and caliber? - Great rifles and with few exceptions quite accurate, the Accutrigger is a bonus. The 25-06 is a good choice and more than ample for deer, I use 100 grain handloads since that is what my particular gun likes, the 120/117 grainers are also dynamite on deer.

3. Does anyone have this model rifle? - The action comes in long and short versions, otherwise there is not a ton of difference except for the stocks that I can see. I have 3 Savage rifles (2 short action and 1 long action)and a 4th (another long action) will likely be coming when my "slush" fund gets an infusion.

4. I can get it for about $409.00 before taxes are included. is this a good price? - Depends on your area, $400 is about the going rate up this way for a new 111 or 11. Other areas can be a tad higher or lower. Also pays to check a couple different stores if price is the key factor, if service is a consideration it is sometimes worth paying a few extra bucks to a place that gives support even after the sale is finalized.

5. Does this rifle come drilled and tapped for scope mounts? - Most bolt rifles are already drilled and tapped. Just look at the top of the receiver and you should see the studs used to keep dust etc out of the holes. Any knowledgeable sales person should be able to demo/show you where they are.

6. Is there any other place that is lower? - see number 4
