Short stock...left handed
« on: August 31, 2005, 03:57:14 PM »
I'm at my wits end trying to find someone who will cut a short (compact-type) left-handed stock for a Montana Rifleman action (Win M70 will also work).  Most of the popular stockmakers I have contacted only cut their own standard length patterns.  If money were no object, I could probably have exactly what I want, but I don't want to pay as much for a stock as I did for the rifled action.  Does anyone have any recommendations for a reasonable stockmaker for this job?

Have you tried Fred Wenig? He has a pretty good selection of stocks available and will do customs.

Richards Micro-fit Stocks [818] 767-6097 makes ALL the various stock styles for the Montana actions. He did a very nice job on a SA "lefty" for me awhile back. Give him  a call.

260,
Has Richards picked up their Montana production?  I did contact them last year and they basically told me my only option was one of their regular stock styles.  I'm sure they are nice stocks (and the prices are nice), but I'm trying to put together a rifle along the lines of a Model 70 compact or the Remington Model Seven Mountain rifle.  I would even take a Model 70 featherweight stock design if I could get it in a laminate.  I've asked several stockmaking companies in the "affordable" range and the only one to come close was, the name escapes me (I'll have to check my old email), but they wanted me to send them my barreled action and were not able to give me any kind of price quote up front.  I have the MR SA chambered for .257Roberts with a 20 inch barrel.  I intend to use it in the mountains of Virginia where a smaller/lighter rifle is much appreciated and shots will not go more than 75-100 yards.  I have a Ruger MKII in .270 for field hunting.  Maybe I'll give Richards another try.

Accurate Innovations makes stocks for the MRC actions in both RH and LH for both short and long actions.  I have three of their stocks and they are very nice.  They use an aluminum bedding block with either laminated or fancy walnut configurations.  They are having a sale on their MRC stocks now.  If you wanted a lightweight synthetic, Mark Bansner would be a good choice if you don't mind finishing it yourself.  Of course, McMillan also makes stocks for the MRC action.

I ordered a short Monte Carlo style in the camouflage laminate from Richards.  I'll finish myself and post up pics when I'm done (several weeks from now).  TKS.
