calling all cars....breed advice needed !!!!!!!!!!!
« on: August 27, 2005, 03:55:21 PM »
well brothers and sisters,  it is time for the myronman to get another dog.   i have been combing the tri state area for the next holley family member.  very little luck so far.

my favorite all time breed is a german shorthair.   so far only one breeder in three states meets my criteria.   she has one young pup available,  $800; and one year old started dog that has been trained to level one obeidence,  started on his training, and is a housedog that is housebroken and is good with small children, $1600.    these are the only prospects for gsp's in the area i can find.

i also have two vizsla breeders i am looking at.  the major problem i have is no experience with the breed.    from what i am told,  not much different from gsp's, except a tad smaller and maybe more energetic.  i would love to know what those with expereince on this think.

also considering a brittany spaniel.  i like the size and that they are pointers.  i dont like their coat.  i am unfamilar with their temperment, but understand they are supposed to be good with children.

i would also consider the right english setter or pointer.  but there aint a whole lot of those around here, and surely not many up to my standards.

so i am wanting opinions on the vizsla breed from those with experience with them.   enlighten me please.....

I have the perfect breed for you.  A Pug.  :D

Loyal.  Can drink with the best of them.  Loves to retrieve.  I  am taking him dove hunting this year.

dont laugh.  the last dog i hunted over was a rottwieler bitch.  she stayed perfectly close, and covered all the ground between the hunters.  nothing could hold tight on her; she was a wonderful flusher.   and if you winged one,  she would run that sucker down for you, too.  some dogs,  regardless of breed, seem to know what to do in a given situation.

The Pug is good at flushing and locating fallen birds.  The problem is with the heat.  It is still in the high 90's and that breed has a problem staying cool in that kind of heat.

The brittney is no longer called a brittney spaniel because it is really a long haired pointer.  They are now called by the name brittney only.  Not that it really matters.  Nice small dog, good if the dog is to live indoors.  My best friend had one when he was growing up, he is one of six kids.  He still has one, and it gets along well with his two kids.  From my experience they hunt well, maybe not as fast as a gsp but they do a good job.

his name is boomer, and he has the sweetest, gentle disposition you have ever seen in a puppy (and he likes birds, too).

believe it or not my last bird dog was just covered with black spots , Yes a fire dog .

He had a nose that would not quit , the only problem is they DO NOT do well with small children and having a 2 year old in the house he got very aggressive to her , so the dog had to go.

WE now have a 8 week old black lab pup

Nice looking pup, whats the blood line? Definately lewellyn strain. The shorthairs you were talking about sounded like either show bred or import. Show folks breed huge heavy dogs; carry to much weight and a bit of dumbing down. Frustrating things! The german imports are generally a bit hard headed and require a very firm hand, not much fun. Have seen and worked with a number of vizlas. Nice dogs but not overly popular. My guess would be their color. They're like a heavy ticked shorthair, had to see in cover. White and dark show up well in most all cover. Heavy ticked, gray dogs, hard to see except in snow.

I've also worked with a number of lewellyn type dogs and really like them. One drawback to them, a tendicity to be soft. If your snake bit you'll have a hard/soft dog, bummer. Hard headed but soft temperment. Likely you don't but it will likely have a soft temperment.

Knew a guy from Eugene, Ore. years ago that got a setter and a danm nice one. Unfortunally the guy was a bit short tempered and unloaded on the dog once. He said it set his training back three months! Turned into a fine dog and taught the owner some patience.
 Even a blind squrrel find's an acorn sometime's![/quote]

he has been with us now for about two months.  i think he is housebroken,  he hasnt gone inside for about a month.    bird wise,  he is doing o.k.  but he wears out quick.  all the new scents in the woods, he has to get straight which ones we are after, an which ones we are not.  but over all, he is showing alot of promise for being six months.   super great with the kids.  they love him and he loves them.
