Is Everyone Ready....
« on: August 23, 2005, 01:50:19 PM »
Is everyone ready for Dove season?  I've loaded up on shells for our .410, 28 ga. and 20 ga. shotguns at our local Wal-Mart.  Replaced decoys that are no longer usable.  Lastly the wife and I have been spending as much time as possible at our club sporting clays range to brush up.  I now feel we are ready to go out and bust 'sky' with the rest of the Dove hunting nuts.  Lawdog

I'd love to do some dove shooting again but likely won't. Once upon a time dove season always opened at noon, no earlier. Now it does on opening day but after that it's daylight.

On opening day they seldom begin to fly before 4:00 PM anyway as it's too dang hot to be out and about. But now the folks holding the shoots want to open at daylight and folks pile in shortly there after to get the best spots. I can't take the heat or sunshine that long to wait until shooting begins. So quite some years back I just gave up on it. Sure miss it but I cannot sit out all day waiting for them to come in.

Greybear,
Sorry to hear that you gave up on Dove hunting.  Man I really love opening day here in Maryland.  Here the entire first section of the season is 12 noon until sun down. On 1 Sept (which is our opening day for dove as well as goose season.)  We all get together and hunt geese in the early morning then we go out to the dove fields about 1030AM and grab a prime spot.  Once you have squaters right on your spot we get together with who ever is close to your spot and break out the eats you have brought to the field and you share what you have with the people around you.  And mind you this is not palnned it just kinda happens.  I always leave the field at the end of the day telling myself its been the best dove opener yet and it does'nt have to do with how many doves you have in your cooler its about the great time you have spent with good people.  But I do agree the sun and heat can wear on a person really quick.  Not to mention the bugs that attack you were your sweating your butt off.  But its always a great time.

Graybeard,

I hear what you say about the heat.  Some things old age and treachery won't overcome.  Thankfully out here hunting times are from one-half hour before sunrise to sunset.  By the time the needle heads toward the century mark I’m on my way home and a cool dip in the pond.  Lawdog
