45/70 Bolt action
« on: August 23, 2005, 09:43:31 AM »
I was talking to a shooting buddy today and he recals several years ago Rifleman magazine did an article on converting a Egyptian Mauser to use 45/70 ammo. I was wondering if anybody else had seen this article? Has anybody on here converted a bolt action to use 45/70?

I built one on a Saimese M98 in 1975.  It was a good choice due to the slanted magazine on the Siamese action which worked well with the rimmed .45-70 case.  I had a gunsmith open up the bolt face and the action rails, and it has fed reliably for almost 30 years.  Took a bunch of Kodiak Island deer, some caribou, a moose and one brown bear...

I've built a few 45-70 bolt guns in recent years. One was a Siamese Mauser, another was on 1917 Enfield and several were done 98 Mausers. The Siamese and Enfield were made to feed, the Mausers were single shot.Feeding issues aside, boltface opening and rebarrel is all that is needing.

Im starting to  think maybe a 450 marlin would be easier. I believe it uses the same case head as a 300, 338 and 7rem mag. That would eliminate the bolt problem. You would just start with a rifle chambered in one of those.

What kind of barrels did you use?

All the barrels used were from Bauska in Montana.
