Two new rifles...great range results...Rem & Sako
« on: August 23, 2005, 04:37:44 AM »
I haven't posted for a long while as I am a fishing guide during the summer and it makes for long days/nights. But I wanted to share my recent experiences...

1. Remington mod 700, Stainless SS, embellished receiver, 7 MM STW w/muzzle brake. Scoped w Zeiss 3.3-10 Conquest
This was a banquet gun that was traded back to the gun shop and didn't sell for a couple years, although it was never out of the box. I have not had good luck with Rem lately and was skeptical...but I couldn't pass up $595. I immediately had the trigger tweaked and filled the hollow stock.
Best 100 yd group so far... 0.310"... 80gr IMR 7828...140gr NP

2. Sako GreyWolf, Stainless laminated, .270 Win cal...scoped w a Zeiss 3.3-10 Conquest
I expect Sakos to shoot very well and this one did not disappoint me. The fit/finish is the best I've seen so far...(I've had several Sakos in the past 10 yrs)...the action is tight and smooth as silk. I am planning on taking this rifle to Wyo next month for Antelope.
     Best group so far... 0.40"... 59gr H 4831 SC...130gr NSB
I am waiting for some Barnes 130gr XLCs to try

I am pleased that Remington still makes a very accurate rifle...the trigger work is to be expected these days...but the light hollow stock was pretty cheesy. A nice McMillan will make this one a keeper for Muleys, Elk, etc...
The Sako GreyWolf is expensive but what isn't these days...I traded two nice rifles for it that I rarely shot anymore...I'll get plenty of use out of this one!

Sounds like a pair of great shooters.
All the Remingtons I have owned were good shooters, especially after a trigger job.
My lone Sako is the most accurate gun I have personally owned.   But it is from another century. :)

What did you fill the stock with?    I simply replaced my ADL plastic stock with a take-off wood ADL stock after I discovered how well the gun shot.

I tried some 130gr Barnes TSX in the .270 today. Haven't found the right recipe for these yet...

60gr H 4831 SC ..... 1.222"

61gr RL 22 ..............0.964" (very close to the top of the casing)

If I can get a 0.463" group with Solid base Noslers I'm hoping to better that with the XLCs or Partitions....if not so be it....Solid Base Noslers should be OK for Prarie Goats.

Are there any downsides to filling the stock with foam??? I just got a T3 SS Lite and I feel like the stock is a little light and cheesy. Does filling it with foam throw the balance off a lot? Does it make a big difference in weight? What type of foam do you use? Sorry for the rapid fire questions but this sounds interesting.

The balance on these rifles is already way off...too much in front.

I used expanding foam that you insulate your home with...it doesn't weigh anything but deadens the hollow sound.
