:-D After hunting with a Marlin 336c 35 Rem & Marlin 1895 Guide Gun 45-70...I find my new play toy the one of choice...very smooth & extremely accurate...I also find the 30.06 ammo in Federal HE more than adequate for anything I may come across...the Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight has made me a Switchhitter... :sniper:

Welcome to the club! I hunt with lever actions and bolt guns and love both types. The Winchester Model 70 Classic Featherweight is one sweet rifle. I have one in 6.5X55. Pure whitetail poison!

I just found a used Model 70 Classic Featherweight in .280 Remington out on the web. It was in nice shape so I bought it. I mounted a 6x42 matte-finished Leupold on Weaver Grand Slam bases with low, matte-finished Weaver rings. The first three groups, two 3-shot and one 4-shot, averaged 1.7" at 100 yards. This was with 150 grain Remington Core-Lokt factory ammo. I took it home and scrubbed it out really good. The next trip to the range I fired four 3-shot groups, two with factory loads and two with handloads. The rifle averaged just under one inch with the smallest group being 1/2". I think this rifle is a keeper.

Are the barrels for the sporter and featherweight the same contour on the newer guns?

No, the sporter still has what would roughly be called a number three contour; I think it measures about .625" at the muzzle and is 24" long in standard calibers, 26" in magnums. The featherweight, from what I remember, is about .550" - .575" at the muzzle and is 22" long for standard calibers.
