stinkin' rem syn adl ... NOT
« on: August 22, 2005, 04:23:33 AM »
... in .270 win shoots only 1.125 inch groups at 100 yards with ww factory 130-grain power points.
all i've done to the j-lock buster ($275 mildly used with bushnell cheapo variable aboard redfield senior two piece mounts) is adjust the trigger to 3.5 pounds and sand out the forearm to relieve it a bit.
first two sighters at 50 yards were touching.
first two shots at 100 made a .30 caliber single hole. third opened to slightly over an inch.
5 or so groups average 1.125-1.25 - on the first factory load tried.
i'm thinking the little donor will be even more ok after a bedding job and further work on the forearm. that tupperware flimsy forearm clearly is still slapping the barrel occasionally.
i surely can stand to use it as is this season as the cash comes in for the other key parts to my heavy hunter. already got a mcm tooley hbr stock inletted for an LA remmy as as gift/blessing. gotta put together the money for truing, heavy sporter/light varmint barrel in .270 or .280, good glass, and trigger.
see, remington still occasionally makes a tuesday/wednesday/thursday rifle - even with a j-lock.

Fish:  IU am in the same boat as you are I have a syn. 308 adl with my handloads of 150 gr. sierras does about the same, it has been relagated to only using when in one of my stands that is located in a pin oak grove its too short to call a long range rifle has only been able to take a coyote out to 220 yds, BTW it does have a cheap lifetime warrenty Swift scope on it. :D    JIM

I have no clue what your complaining about.  If a new inexpensive rifle of any brand shoots 1" with factory loads I'd be happy.  Surely your being sarcastic?

look back at the little face. it is winking. i AM NOT complaining. i am WAY happy   with the way the adl shoots. i wrote it that way because of the huge remington thread elsewhere on this board.
by the time i've properly bedded the thing and worked more on the forearm, i expect it to go sub-moa in little bitty triangular groups off the sandbags.
am i huge remington fan? nope. but i was given that fine mcmillan stock, inletted for an adl LA, so i got me a nice used rifle. i'll hunt with it in the factory stock until i have all the rest of goodies lined up for the custom treatment. 8)
for $275? shooting as is with just a little trigger tweaking? 1.125-inch groups? hey, it's a major bargain. it might shoot better as is with different ammo. but i'm gonna bed it and sand some more on the left side of the forearm before i try anything else.

Remington 700`s are super accurate out of the box, everyone I have ever owned. I even loved the factory triggers. Yours is a real shooter that`s for sure :D Jack.

I'm sure that there has to be a factory load out there (or two, or three) that will shoot MOA or better in your gun.  All my Remington M700s shoot MOA or better with at least a couple of factory loads.

zach and slayer:
still gonna bed the thing before trying different ammo. i really like the ww power point .270 ammo. out of a previous rem 700 .270, it killed like lightning. handloading may get back in the picture for the best accuracy possible. it has been my limited experience with the chambering that just about all the major factories roll good stuff for it.
one thing i really like about the cheap adl syn stock is the narrow grip and slimness around the receiver. nice to carry.

I am with fish as far as being happy with mine I got it in a trade with a friend of mine and at the time it sported a youth syn. stock I had a short action adl syn full size stock that I put on it, thats all I did and I used it last year on deer in the pin oak grove I was refering to, I am sure its not the most accurate rifle out there but it hasnt failed to perform as it is, Keep up the good work Remington, I will always give their products my hard earned look at first when looking for another rifle, BTW I guess over the last 40+ years I have owned about every brand of rifle manu. some good and some not so good. :D    JIM

I have shot 4 different ADL's.  They were all MOA guns.  Some much better.

adl is freshly bedded and forearm sufficiently (i hope) relieved. hope to get back to the range sometime this weekend - with ww power points and maybe a box of rp or hornady 130-grainers, and maybe a box of 150-grainers of one brand or another. may try a box of the fancier stuff, too, before deciding whether to handload. if i'm not too shaky, betcha the groups shrink.
by the way, i cleaned the bore this week. it was SLICK, and cleaned up very quickly with rem clean and rem oil. perhaps the quickest cleaning bore with which i've ever dealt. i don't think i'll need to burnish it.

Last summer I bought a new ADL in 223 Rem for a project gun. I got the complete new gun for less than just the receiver would cost. My plan was to install a heavy target barrel, a Timiney trigger, and maybe a stock.

Just for grins, I decided to mount a scope and shoot the factory barrel before doing the transplant. Needless to say, the factory barrel is still on the gun and so is the factory trigger. I shot sub-MOA groups right out of the box. I have since changed the spring in the factory trigger and set it at a very crisp 2.5 lbs. Took the cheapie scope off and put a decent new Leupold base and rings with a new Burris 3.5X10 50mm scope. This gun is a "one holer" at 100 yds.

Not bad for a total investment of $700, including new base, rings and scope.
