Hello Members:  An update on the Savage Model 40, which has been MIA for the past 1 1/2 years - Apparently the new, revised, Model 40 is starting to get around - check out this new review, dated 8/15/05:

Looks to be  shooter as most all Savages are.  Three shots using factory W-W ammo into a group measuring 9/16" @ 100 yards.  Not to shabby.  Just think what it will do with some good reloads and a little time.  I would say they are going to sell very well, especially to the "Varmint Caller/Pelt Hunter" group.  Lawdog

I wonder why it's only being produced in the .22 Hornet caliber?  The first I heard of it the rifle was to be in .223 also.  Is it possible the action isn't strong enough for the .223?  I honestly do not know.  Any ideas out there on this?  Best wishes.

The Savage web Page still says 223 and 22 hornet. But the guys at Michi-Gun say only 22 hornet and they can't even get any of them. I checked yesterday.

Actually the web site, http://www.savagearms.com/40Varmint.htm, says .22 Hornet only.  The reason I believe they did this is because that the Model 12 Varminter Low Profile Single Shot – with AccuTrigger comes in .223 Rem, .22-250 Rem, .204 Ruger thus no need for another single shot rifle in .223 Rem..  Check out the Model 12 Single Shot at http://www.savagearms.com/12VarminterSS.htm.  Lawdog

You are right Lawdog it is the catalog that says it is available in 223. Anyway I bought a model 12 yesterday.

Better a .221 than a chintay ol' Hornet. I carried a #3 Ruger for years, Cut up my fingers tryin' to reload, and still collapsed case shoulders. :P

I was wondering this also. I think they did chamber it in 223 for a year. I called Savage and asked if it comes in only 22Hornet and they said yes. No 223 in this model.

No offense but how were you cutting your fingers?  I have been shooting/reloading the .22 Hornet for 43 years and never cut a finger.  Collapsed a shoulder every so often but usually on older cases that I had tried to reload to many times.  Started out reloading with an old Lee Hand Loader(still have it sitting on one of my shelves in my reloading shed with a bunch of other Lee Hand Loaders) and now use RCBS/Redding/Lyman equipment.  Nothing wrong with the tried and true .22 Hornet.  Excellent accuracy, extremely quiet muzzle report and non existent recoil makes for one heck of a fun cartridge.  It well deserves it’s re-birth in popularity.  Lawdog

After inside and outside chamferin' the mouth of the case was danged near as sharp as my knife. Bein' careful to guide the flatbase bullet into the mouth of this cookie cutter usually resulted in blood at least once a reloading session. I got tired of it and had an old 722 made into a .221. A bit better ballistics, just a little bit more noise, cases that lasted forever, and normal finger printsl  :-D No offense taken.  :wink:

I called Savage last week and the lady told me they would be available the end of Sept.  I looked in GunBroker.com and there is one list in there for sale at $425.00.  Pretty high I think, but looks like she was right and they should be out there.  I don't need anymore varmint rifles, but I got to have one of these.

I think Savage will have to produce the model 40 in other calibers or discontinue it.  There just aren't all that many Hornet shooters to make the model viable.  I'm certain Savage has sales projections that show this.
Now we'll just have to wait to see what Savage's next move is.  Best wishes.

I am not convinced of that, the hornet should have been dead 10 times over but it is not. I think there is a a new class of gun segment now or maybe just rediscovered. I would call it the "acreage gun" more than a 22 but something that won't spook the neighbors.  I would say the success of the 17 hmr was an indicator of this new segment.

Cal,

You would be surprised at the number of .22 Hornet shooters and that doesn't include those that shoot the .22 K-Hornet.  They have been trying to kill off the Hornet many times over the years.  Just to many that own and shoot this great little cartridge.  Since the addition of new powders and bullets the effectiveness of the Hornet really shows what it can do.  Accuracy has been improved to the point that within it’s range it’s as accurate as any other .22 centerfire.  I easily get sub-MOA groups with all of my Hornets(3 of them) and it’s one of the most pelt friendly cartridges for called in varmints that you can find.  Easily takes Coyotes out to 175 - 200 yards and combined with mild muzzle blast and non-existent recoil it’s easy to understand why it’s so popular today.  Give one a good workout and you too will see why the Hornet fan club is as big as it is.  And growing.  Lawdog

i thing a mossberg 22. long bore rifle is the best for squriells :-)
