Well I went out today just looking to see what was at the local gun shops. Well I see a S&W 460 and just had to look at it. Now my two 500 Mag's have a little brother.  :D

And I thought I did not want one.  :-D

I know, I am a sucker for a new gun.  :-D  Just the thought of shooting 45L/C, 454 Casull and the 460 Mag seems intriguing.  :D

Well I took it out today at the indoor range, which is only 25 yards. I just wanted to get it on paper. I first shot several 45 L/C and was very impressed with the accuracy. At 25 yards I had one jagged hole with 5 shots in it. Felt like shooting a .22.  :-D  Then I shot the 454 Casull rounds, and was about 5 inches higher that the 45 L/C's, but the accuracy again was one big hole with a 5 shot group. I adjusted the scope down and got it hitting where I wanted it. Then I wipped out the 460 Mag's. Shot to the same point of aim as the 454 Casull and the groups were under 1 inch and one ragged hole.  But let me tell you, the muzzle flash is BIG. I can't wait to get to the out door range and see what this will do at 100 and 200 yards.  :D  :-D  :-D  :-D

My guess is that you have or will have reloading equipment on order for this new caliber...Am I correct?

As soon as I can find anyone with the dies and Hornady bullets, I will be reloading them.

I went out shooting it today at 100 yards and I am very impressed with the accuracy. I got 1.25 inch groups off sand bags. I shot at a clay target at 150 yards and blew it away on my second shot. The first shot went 1 inch high.  I have the gun sighted in for 2 inches high at 100 yards.  Now I will go back to the range and try some 200 yards shots.  :-D  :D  :D

I love my 500 Mag, but this 460 Mag is coming close to my favorite.  :D  :-D

Oh boy...You're making me want a 460 real bad...I don't know if I can sneak that by the wife yet...I may have to build up the funds slowly over time and make the purchase next spring.  Of course I want a G2 Contender or Encore as well...Decisions, Decisions, Decisions... :shock:

BTW, I was doing a little research on factory ammo for the 500 and 460...It seems that the 460 factory ammo is cheaper than the 500 ammo.  I don't reload yet so this may be another reason to get into a 460 as opposed to a 500Mag.  :? At least according to Hornady's website...Of coure that was comparing an SST Bullet with an XTP bullet.

For the 460, I found it for $20.00 for 20 rounds. I also found it for $22.95. A lot less expensive than the 500 Mag. But it will still be a round I reload for.  :D

I ordered some Hornady dies from Mid-way for the 460. They should be here in a few days. I wanted the RCBS carbide dies, but they are not due in for about a month. I also e-mailed Barnes Bullets and they want me to call them to get some load data for there 200 gr. Barnes Bullet. He wrote me to call him, so he could give me enough data to get me started. I also called Hornady and was told no loading for load data has been done and may be awhile before they start. They need cases for the load data to be developed, all the cases are going for ammo production at this time.

Now that you have shot both the 500 and the 460 in the 8 3/8ths barrels how much different is the recoil.  I talked to you about getting a 500 months ago, but bought a new Black Widow instead.  I am interested in what yo think about the two calibers.  If I got the 500 I would keep my bullet weight around 275 to 350 grains, and if the 460 the hornady of course.  Just give me your opinion and what would be the choice just for one do all pistol.  Thanks Jon

The recoil in the 460 is a lot less than the 500 MAG. If you plan on sticking with one pistol as the do all, as much as I love the 500 MAG, I think I would go with the 460 MAG. The light bullets of 200 gr. for long range deer hunting, and up to 395 gr. cast bullets for anything else out there.  :D Or you can do what I did and have both.  :-D
