Well, I do enjoy a good conversation about the merits of good calibers.  I would even converse about the Rigby .........................if it wasn't so old and outdated.  Ruger needed to throw something back at Remington for putting out the Rem Mag, but couldn't find anything better than the Rigby.  Now there are wounded deer all over the U S with 416 Rigby holes in them and a bunch of hunters wishing that they had listened to those rifle guru's that hummed out the words.................Pick the Rem Mag........Pick the Rem Mag.............................

Your Killing me.... :)    :-D

oso45-70 you are correct, it is all in fun.  And I think crow_feather knew that.  :D

I dont have any experience with either but putting aside expence i would give the Rigby the thumbs up, it not only loads at the same velocity of the Remington but can be handloaded well above the remington  you could get it to equal the Dakota and Weatherby. Nosler puts out factory ammo now there 416remington with a 400 nosler partition is at 2400 fps while there 416 rigby with the same bullet is at 2530, Far more wounded bears with the Rigby? come on lets get real!

:-D  :-D  :-D  :-D   You need to take it on the road.  You may have missed your true calling?

Everyone knows the .416 Rem. is a dying cartridge, not much longer for this world.  The .416 Rigby has been hanging in there ever since 1911 and is going to be available for pall bearer duty when the Remington Bean Counter's call.  Lawdog

I was out in the woods with my guide approaching the spot where we had seen him last.  The monster brownie had quietly stepped over the top of the ridge and enterd the brush.  When we at last reached the spot, we were extremely cautious fearing a charge.  Slowley we stepped toward the trail entering the dew moistened alders.
With a roar that sounded like a freight train comming through my house and a quick movement of alders we saw that he was only seconds away from tearing us apart.  I raised my Winchester and started to pull the trigger in a desperate attempt to stop the charging ton of teeth, fangs, and fury.
In a sudden movement he stopped, looked at my rifle, and groaned.  "My goodness, that's a Remington Mag - not a Rigby" he cried, and he turned and ran quickly into the brush.

That is the problem.  With a .416 Remington they run away.  With a .416 Rigby they just lay down and die without pulling the trigger.   :-D  :-D   Lawdog

You got that right Lawdog.  :-D  If I want to shoot something a little less than the 416 Rigby, I would grab another OLD round, the 45-70 and it can do what the 416 Remington mag can do.  :-D  :-D  :-D  :-D

Hey guys!

Boy, I wrote this rebuttal that really made the Rigby look bad.  I used the words "anchor", "dud", "inaccurate", and a few others. Then I realized that I couldn't submit what I wrote.  I should feel sorry for anyone that is stuck with a Rigby.

And yes, I can see the tie between the Rigby and the 45-70.  Both are out of date, have been replaced by better, and live on because some people can't give up the good old days.

crow_feather, I think you need to give up your OLD Muzzleloaders and move up to inlines. If you think the 45-70 and 416 Rigby have out lived there usefulness.  :D  :-D  Come on and move up to the 21st Century.  :-D  :-D  :-D

I shoot the 416 Rem. and the only thing that matters to me is that they both [ the Rigby and the Rem ] can shoot over 5000 ft lbs of energy.

oso45-70,

If you don't mind me asking, who made those .416 Rigby double rifles you talked about earlier?  As far as I knew, until very recently only magazine rifles were made for this cartridge except for one double built by John Rigby & Co.

I don't doubt your memories.  I'm interested in the history of guns and cartridges and often find there are things that aren't covered in the history books.  Wars destroying factory along with their records, natural disasters destroying files, gunsmiths working independently, etc., can result in guns unknown to the so-called experts.

There were a number of double rifles chambered in the .416 Rigby back when the .416 Rigby first came out in 1911.  Holland & Holland, Westly/Richards, John Rigby and even Merkel Double Rifles just to name a few.  Go to http://www.stevespages.com/pdf/merkel_sidebyside.pdf and scroll down to page 17 of 36 to where it says;

Quote
OPERATION OF THE DOUBLE RIFLE "SAFETY" MECHANISM
The double rifle safety mechanism is located on the tang of the receiver assembly just in front of the buttstock on the top side (See figure 5). Some Merkel Double Rifles are equipped with Automatic Safeties, i.e., the safety is automatically engaged each time the breech is opened. Double rifles in .375H&H, .416 Rigby or .470 Nitro Express are not equipped with automatic safeties because they are designed for dangerous game when the need for quick reloading and follow-up shots are critical. The firearm is in the "safe" position when the safety is moved fully rearward and the letter "S" appears on the receiver tang directly in front of the safety. In this position sear engagement is blocked to prevent discharge under non-firing conditions.

By the way this is a PDF file so you will need something like Adobe Reader to view it! LD

Very few if any double rifles are chamber for the .416 Rigby but there are a number of bolt action rifles available for this fine old cartridge that has been re-born.  Lawdog

Thanks for the answer.  From what I had read, I was under the impression that, before WWII, if you wanted an English double in 40 caliber you had to get the flanged 450/400 cartridge.
