Author Topic: Browning A bolt 243 wssm Very hard to open bolt after firing (Read 663 times)

I just bought a used Browning in 243 wssm, it shoots very nice groups and everything is smooth except after firing the bolt is very hard to open. You have to take it off the rest and brace it on your legs and hold tight with one hand and open it I have a 300 win that opens as smooth as silk anybody have any idea whats going on here. The gun was used but I could not find any sign of wear not even a scuff on the stock.

Are you shooting handloads? Hard bolt opening is usually a sign of high pressures.

No they are factory winchester 100 grain power points. But after looking at them I noticed the primers are flattened out. I have never seen that before in a factory load. I am trying some lighter handloads next. If any of you guys have a good load please let me know.

There is absolutely no reason a factory load, Winchester Power Points even, should do that with your gun. Handloads, possibly - Factory ammo, would make me extremely nervous.

I would take the gun to a gunsmith and have the chamber checked. It could be too tight in the neck or throat.

Yeah, what Ramrod sed. Don't fire the gun again until you get it checked out. The eye you save may be your own!
