What are carrying this season?
« on: August 10, 2005, 02:00:19 AM »
South Carolina deer season starts this upcoming Monday.  I won't hunt a lot unitl 9/15 when the doe permits come into affect, but the time is here to get the gear in order..

This will be a rebuilding season of sorts for me.  My house was robbed on 7/3 claiming two of my favorite hunting rifles.  So I have to regroup and get ready.  I did purchase a new Rem. 700 VS in 22-250 to replace one of the stolen guns, but I have yet to set it up...

So this year I will hunting w/....
Ruger M77mk2, 3-9x40 Bushnell scope
NEF Handi rifle 45-70, 1.4-6x32 Burris scope
Sako M39 7.62x54r open sights
Eventually the new Rem.700VS, 22-250, 6-18x50 AO Bushnell.

SO, what are you carrying this year?

Ours doesn't start for a another few months.  My Encore 209x50 has a new Leupold 2-7X33 on it...

Then when regular rifle season starts up I will switch to the .308 barrel barrel.

The big changes will have to do with ammo selection this year.

In New York we have two different "Zones", a "Northern Zone" from Oct. 22 - Dec. 4. we can use a rifle, shotgun, muzzleloader and handguns. And a "Southern Zone" from Nov. 19 - Dec. 11. No rifles so far. They might start letting us use rifles in certain "southern zone counties".

In the northern zone I mostly use my Marlin 336CS in 35 Rem. (one deer so far!). It has a Leupold VX-II 2-7x33mm Shotgun Scope on it, its my woods/brush gun (I think I'm going to change the scope to a Leupold VX-II 2-7x28mm Ultralight Scope and put this one on either my 12 ga. or 444 Mar.) . I sometimes use my pre-'64 Winchester model 88 in 308 Win. (two deer with this one!). I have a cheap Tasco scope on it now, I'm going to put a Leupold VX-II 3-9x33mm Ultralight scope on it. I also have a Remington model 700 Classic in 280 Rem. I don't hunt with it to much unless I'm hunting open country which isn't that often!

In the southern zone I use my Remington 870 12 ga. I have a 23 inch fully rifled slug barrel on it. I don't hunt in the area that they might let us use rifles in so I'm probably going to keep using this. I might put my Leupold scope on it as mentioned above!

I'm probably going to hunt with a different gun every time, at least until I cycle through them.........

I'll be hunting with my Savage 116 in 30-06 and Bushnell 3200 3-9x40. I might dust off my Remington 742 in 30-06.

Of course after all the discussion on the Bolt Action forum about the 7MM-08 I'm wanting one of those to try. Sound like a nice, early Christmas present to me.

Well, I hope to start out with my Martin compound, 70 lbs., Easton 2216 with 125 grain Rocky broadheads.
When gun season rolls around I'm getting out my T/C Omega, using 100 grains of loose Pyrodex and a 300 grain XTP. This is a non rifle zone (New York's Southern Zone) and I'll use the muzzleloader during the firearms season and the late archery/muzzleloader season.
If I get a chance to go to Pennsylvania this year it will be my Model 70 Winchester Featherweight .30-06 using a 165 Ballistic Tip.
The Omega wears a Nikon, the M70 a Leupold.

My primary rifle will be my Rem 7600 7mm-08 and either my Ruger 77 stainless .243 or my Win. M70 stainless 30-06 as my backup & wet weather rifle. I was going to get back in the groove with my S&W 629 .44 but since my knee surgery has me pretty much home bound I won't get enough practice in.   :x

Oh thanks "Redhawk1".   :-D  :-D   I was going to answer and then I saw you added your bow and I had to redo my answer.  For bow season I’ll be using one of my Oneida Black Eagles.  Would like to try my Barnett crossbow but California still has them as illegal for hunting deer as far as I know.  For rifle season I plan on using any of the following;

.25 WSSM M70 Coyote, Burris Black Diamond 6-24X 50mm
.25-06 Rem. Ruger M77V Centennial model, Burris Black Diamond 6-24X 50mm
.270 WSM Savage M10, Burris Signature 6-24X 44mm
.30-06 Custom Enfield, Weaver K4(my Father’s rifle that I make sure goes hunting every year and it’s the one I grab the first day of deer season)
.300 Weatherby Mark V Deluxe with it’s Burris Signature 4-16X 44mm that I have had for over 40 years.

One of these will get the job done.  Lawdog

Looks like this year I will start off here in WV with my Darton compound (old and heavy, but reliable) and then when rifle season comes in, I'm guessing my Ruger M77 MkI in .250 savage with leupold 2-7X, and if no luck there I will bust out the Marlin .336 in good ol' .30-30.  If the gas prices don't keep me from getting out there.......I travel 40 miles to the family farm for good hunting.....guess I'll be pulling overtime when I'm not hunting.

I live in Kansas, and while I have hunted in-state, I normally hunt in SW Missouri / NW Arkansas.

For hunting the steep hills of SW Missouri / AR, I will be using my Glock 20 Longslide w/ fitted barsto in 10mm for deer in the thick.

For Kansas hunts, I'll be using my Rem M700 VLS in .243.
