Who makes a 257 Roberts?

I'm thinking the 257 Roberts would make an ideal gun for the grandkids to hunt deer with.  However, I'm having trouble finding any at the web sites I've visited.  Who is chambering this cartridge these days?

Ruger makes one in an ultralight blue with a wood stock, a standard weight blue with a wood stock, and a number 1 blue with a wood stock.  I have the ultralight and it is far and away my favorite rifle.  It has an adult length stock, but the stock is very trim.  It has a lightweight 20" barrel.

How is the recoil in this rifle?  Could a 9 year old boy handle it?  From what I have heard the 257 Bob is a great caliber.  

I have been pondering the same questions, on a rifle for my boy.  I have it narrowed to 257 Roberts, 7-30 waters, and 30-30.  Everyone has said just get a 243, but I have witnessed several bad experiences when the shots were not perfect with the .24 bore.

I believe I just saw recently that Savage was putting it out in their 110 also.  Go to www.gunbroker.com and search.  That may give you an idea what is around.  You are right - the .257R is a great caliber to start young shooters with.  I have a Remington 722 and a Mauser that I will be starting both my sons with.

Winchester made the .257 Roberts in the mid or late 80's as a Model 70 Featherweight.  If you can find one your kid would have a nice piece that is bound to be a collector, if it isn't already.

That Model was produced right after US Repeating Arms started manufacturing Winchesters, the Featherweight was all the rage at the time and the .257 Roberts was like Hens Teeth to get without paying a premium.  I had one ordered at the time but I was outbid twice, so I settled for a .308, which is just as good for me.  How long the Roberts was produced I don't know.

I guess what I am saying is that there are some fine used and NIB rifles out there in that caliber.

An older Ruger .257 Roberts has become my favorite bolt gun.  Mine has a 22" barrel.

IMHO, the Roberts with 115-120g bullets makes a great choice for beginners as it has all the reach they need with limited recoil.  (Recoil, even when pushing a 115g Barnes TSX to 3,000fps, is only around 11 foot-pounds - less than a typical .30-30.

I doubt your son would notice the difference between the .257 and a .243, but the Bob is not any more deadly, it still requires putting the right bullet in the right place to make clean kills.  :wink:

The .257 Roberts in a Ruger M77 would make a great first rifle/cartridge for any kid.  My Granddaughter just turned 13 this year, started big game hunting last year(2004) with a 7mm-08 I built for her(her choice).  Unless your son is way on the small side he should be able to handle a good 100 gr. load which would be perfect for the Roberts.  I'm using 48.5 gr. of H4831 behind a Barnes 100 gr. TSX for 3,073 fps.  Deadly accurate and powerful enough for the largest Mule Deer walking.  Lawdog

I just had a Turk Mauser built up into a .257 Roberts and I can honestly say that it should be fine for anyone old enough to handle a gun.  One of my uncles had some shoulder surgery a good while back that makes him hurt for 3 days after shooting his .30-06.  He can shoot my .257 all day and not feel a thing.

This one was actually finished up after last year's season so I haven't tried it on any game yet, but so far it's been great.  Season opens this coming Monday, so hopefully I'll have a field report before too long. :)

I think Ruger offerred theirs in Lefty also?

You can get a .257 Roberts barrel for a Savage but I don't believe from the factory.  Look on Midwayusa.com.

I think Ruger is about the only manufacturer to offer the .257Roberts as a production rifle at this point in time.  Remington might offer it in one model.  I'm not certain.  Periodically someone will produce a run of .257s
for a year or so.  Your best bet might be to check the web sites from time to time in case it isn't advertised.  It isn't dead, just taking a rest.  That old rascal will never die.  Best wishes.
