Has anyone checked out the Weatherby that Walmart bought out? I checked it out the other day and it seamed like a fine gun for around $360 bucks. Just wondering what you guys thought of the gun seeing as that i dont know to much when it comes down to the nitty gritty.

I think you may be talking about the Weatherby Vanguard.

If it is a Vanguard, you are really looking at a Howa action not a Mark V.

It has an AR-15 style extractor, which is a little beefier than a remington extractor but not as beefy as the mauser style extractor you would see on a Ruger or Winchester.

I am pretty sure they are made in Japan.

A buddy had a .35 whelen built on a Howa action. It is a good action. I think I prefer it to the Remington action. The only change I owuld like to see is a bolt that can be disassembled by hand.

I don't know what kind of accuracy you could expect from it.

There is a also a sub-moa vanguard that is being marketed. I think there was an article about it in a recent issue of Rifle Shooter.

Ive got a Vanguard. Its a good shooter now. When I got it the trigger was the almost the worst I had ever pulled. I have a lot of C&R weapons. I put a timney trigger in an that fixed that. The cheap plastic stock is the next thing that will get the boot. It has a ton of flex. That being said it will shoot sub MOA groups with WWB ammo if you shoot really slow and let the barrel cool.
Save your money there are better shooters right out of the box out there. If I had it to do again I would get a Savage. Ive heard good things about them.

I am looking real hard at a Vanguard Sporter, blue and wood, in .257 Weatherby but its at our local sporting goods store. Wal-Mart no longer has an exclusive on selling Vanguards. Lawdog

Does the Vanguard have an adjustable trigger, or was an after-market trigger necessary?

i have one in 30-06 right out of the box i shot a three shot group that i could cover with a dime at 100 yards. without a doubt one of the most accurate rifles i've owed and i used to have a savage

The vanguard had an adjustable trigger. But I could never get it very light or crisp. It seemed to have a long pull and about halfway through it felt like it had a notch in it. The sear looked like it was cut with a hacksaw. I cleaned it up some with a stone. But I finally got pissed at it and ordered a Timney. The Timney cost just about the same as the local smith wanted to fix the stock trigger.

The Vanguard is a steal as far as I am concerned. See my previous range report.

I just finished pillar and glass bedding a Wildcat Thumbhole from Richard's and am going to build more rounds and take it to the range later this week. Will give another range report and photos.

I have Savages, Remington and nothing comes close to this Vanguard.

The Vanguards are a great deal not many people know about. They ship with a test target guaranteeing 1.5 inch or better (usually better). They have easy to adjust (the adjustment screw is in the front of the trigger group, accessible from the magazine well with an Allen wrench) triggers usually set to around 4lbs from the factory, they use Remington scope bases and the "flimsy" synthetic stock is actually quite nice. I like the raised cheekpiece and the feel of the material. It may flex some, but I promise it doesn't hurt accuracy one bit. I think the only better deal less than $1,000.00 is a Tikka T3.

Actually the one I am strongly thinking about getting is the Vanguard Sporter. Blued and Walnut in .257 Weatherby Magnum. Every time I go into the store I can't keep from taking another look at it. I just know it's going to follow me home soon. Lawdog

Only my 2 cents, but I would pass on the .257 Mag. It is a screamer and a game getter, but still a .25 bullet. More recoil and more noise, but still not any bigger, just faster. If you buy factory ammo, it is approx. $35/2o rounds. I would definitely buy a 25-06 first and prefer a .257 Roberts.
By the way, I have hunted with each. I now have the .257 Roberts as my "go to" .25 bore.
I love the Vanguards and the Howa 1500's. But not in the Weatherby calibers.

Yeah I would stay away from the Weatherby calibers. not only is the ammo expensive but you are limited in availability.

I think a 25-06 would be good for comparison. .257 Roberts is probably the most ideal deer cartridge ever made, but not real popular.

Sorry guys but I already have one .257 Weatherby(along with 11 other Weatherby centerfire rifles in 8 other Weatherby calibers) but it's a Mark V Deluxe and it is such a sweet shooter I have decided to get another. You can never have too many "Quarter Bores". The only other caliber that the Vanguard Sporter comes in that I would be interested in is the .300 Weatherby, but I already have two of those. The mag I bought for my dad is beautiful Mark V and a great shooter. I don't reload so $2 a pop means I seldom shot it for fun.

I love my Chevy (Roberts 760) and you like the Porsche. Ain't it great to have choices?

My younger brother bought one in .300 WbyMag. Very accurate, but due to recoil and cost of ammo, he rarely shoots it. Wby ammo is gold!!!

By the way, I almost feel guilty for mentioning this as Wal-Mart has already pushed way too many small businesses out, but many of you may not know that they have a special order catalog behind the counter in sporting goods that you can order guns from. There is a surprisingly good selection of makes and calibers from rifles to shotguns that you will never see on display as well as specialty ammo. It only takes a couple of days to get a gun in if it's in stock at one of their warehouses. I ordered a Ruger M77 All Weather in .260 from them a couple of years back. The only other Ruger I have ever seen on display there is a 10/22. It was a painless transaction at a very good price.

I bought a 7mm Rem mag Weatherby Vanguard from WALLY WORLD had a target included with it sub 1'' M.O.A. it shot good with a number of handloads trigger was adjustable but still not good but not a bad buy for the money.
