38-55 mold ?
« on: February 21, 2003, 08:02:04 PM »
I just ordered a Hoch 365 grain nose pour mold for a 1-14"  barrel 38-55 chamber throated to .150".  Will this bullet stabilize adequately to 600 yards for target shooting? I am (not) using this for BPCR sillouette so I am not concerned about knocking over any steel. I just want to know if anyone has used this combo or something simular for targets up 600 yards or even 1000 yards. I am a regular modern rifle 1000 yard BR competitor but want a little more challenge . I own a 1-18" twist 45-70 that is throated also and already know the bullet to use for this rifle. Just want to get the 38-55 working to its optimum. I would appreciate replies of shooters with first hand experience rather than speculations.  :)

I shoot a 44 1/2 in 38-55 with a 1-15 Badger Barrel.  One of the bullets I use is the one you mentioned.  I use this in silhouette and in NRA matches at 600 yds.  I use blackpowder, compressed 46gr of FFF.  No trouble it is stable at that distance, I have not gone further.  On the paper at 600 yds it is more than capable of holding its' own, I do not have to take a back seat to anyone at this distance.  My rifle does better than I am able to.

This is just what I need to know , thank you! Can you tell me what type of group sizes you are able to get at 600 yards? I realize NRA shoots are for score but am curious what can be achieved for ten shots. :sniper:

38-55 which bullet is this?
And since your not taking the back seat how many matches have you won with this?  If your the same 38-55 from over on shooters that fella made similar statements yet folks that shot with that guy mention he had a tough time hitting the 600 yard berm let alone the target frame at 600 yards.

inquiring minds would like to know?

I am informed for the best long range accuarcy in a 38-55 a 1-14 or tighter twist is best suited for heavy bullets and longer ranges.

I am not the same guy on shooter.com.  My bullet weighs 359 grs as cast from a Hoch nose pour mold.  It is .3765 in diameter and I pan lube with emmerts with the addition of some anhydrous lanoline.  I have never won a match and I never will.  I am too old and am no longer interested in competition I shoot for the pure joy of using the old style rifles and the methods that were used years ago.  On a good day all my shots stayed in the black on the 600 yd target.  It made me smile, I guess I was a winner after all

38-55,
Thanks for the info, I am about to get my Shiloh 38-55 any day and Was just wondering I opted for a 1-14 barrel in my rifle so am hoping it will do the trick with heavy 38 bullets if i decide to try this at Silhouette. It is mainly for a Schutzen BP Rifle but may serve dual duty for my daughter has already her eye on it when we get it she wants to fire form the brass. I got 350 brand new WW cases and a bunch of Fed 150 pistol primers.

Thanks ,

Since there appears to be some controversy to my question  and my mold should arrive soon I will just have to test things out for myself and let you all know how it works. I have been told 1-14" is better for 1.3"+ long bullets in .375 cal. but that 1-13" or faster is better. I have read however in match reports of folks using the 1-14 or 1-15 and doing well so......... :?
