Yeah it's probably a smart thing to have one along but I have to say that's where I draw the line with cell phones....taking one fishing.  Where I go fishing, I know where I'm at so it's not like I'm gonna get lost and if I get in a tight spot it's at least back in the truck.

I don't know how many times I've been on a lake trying to relax and enjoy the peace and quiet and then somebody's cell phone rings clear across the lake and you can hear their conversation like they were sitting next to you.

To me fishing and cell phones just aren't made to go together.....go fishing and leave the cell phone at home....or at least back in the truck.

Just my opinion.

I forgot to put in my previous reply that that is a good idea though to put it in a plastic bag.

Here in Western Pa, some fishing spots are down inside a valley. DOWN..... inside a valley! Ya gotta look up in all directions to see sky. Ain't no cell reception.
Nice to have a means of telling someone that the fishing is too good to leave right away. Even if it's necessary to hike to a spot with reception. I hope that's all you ever would need it for.
How do you use a Ziplock for a phone that opens up like a clam, in time to answer if it rings? Now you have to picture this, me, in the water up to my..., the current working against me, the nice round rocks on the bottom slicker than snot, concentrating on the job at hand, and the cell goes off. Usually scares the heck outta me! Gotta fumble thru the pocket thats buttoned shut, cause clips can't be depended on, and don't work thru a plastic bag anyway. Then, gotta open the Ziplock to open the phone. Don't drop the phone, or the rod, or the Ziplock! Hurry and answer before the thing quits, cause you don't always know who called, and maybe the reception is bad and you won't know who called, and you have to hike somewhere to find out who called! Don't drop the %^&* thing into the river, the current is really fast today and it's 200 feet wide! It'll sink like a rock and get washed down stream and ......!!!!!
I think this whole thing needs some thought.    Woodbutcher

I don't understand.  Wouldn't you go fishing to get away from cell phones?  Why on earth would you want to take one with you?  I go fishing to get away from all that.  Must be my age.
What ever turns your crank I guess.
I mean no offence, but that strikes me as being so strange to be fishing and willingly be interrupted by a telephone call.
I guess that's why we're all made different.
Good fishing to you all,
williek

I take my cell phone with me everyplace I go including fishing and hunting. when it is with me fishing and hunting it is for emergencys. it is so nice to beable to call for help when you need it. my hunting friends and I all have nextel and it gets a good signal where we hunt. we will only call each other if we are in trouble, time to come in or if someone needs help with a deer.

I take mine with me when I go fishing or to the target range but I turn it off and refuse to use it only in case of emergency. Don't want to be tied down to the darn things either so I only turn it on for emergency use. :music:  :music:  :music:  :music:

The only phone calls other then the people in my hunting party would be from my wife or one of my fire stations, they will only call me in the case of an emergency or they need a driver.

I put the phone on vibrate when hunting. that being said, one of the guys at one of my stations can make ring tones from whatever way or mp-3 file I have.
he made me a very nice turkey call from a turkey calling CD i have, now I am thinking about having him do the same  with a deer grunt.

I take a cell phone with me while fishing, but I keep it turned off unless I need it for an emergency.

I take my cell phone with me while hunting on my private land. When I shoot my deer I call my father who is at the house to bring the truck down through the field and into the woods to pick the deer up! It makes it very convienent!

Keep those turkey calls to hen clucks, or someone might answer your phone with #4s!

I carry my phone with me all the time - I pay enough for it I'm going to have it if I need it.  But I seldom have the ringer on - it is for my convenience, not anyone else.

Unfortunatly, there are a lot of people whose work requires a cell/phone or pager 24 X 7 365.  I was one of them.  WAS!  That's the only way they can get outdoors!

I've jumped in the swimming pool with one, and dropped one in the lake.

I lost my pager out running dogs.......the brush was over head high in places, and I'd covered about 100 acres before I noticed it was gone.  I used the cell phone to call the pager.  Walked about 50 yards and made a call.  Walked another 50 yards an called the pager again.  Finally found it!  My buddy still dogs me about that to this day.

I don't have a job now, but I'm not living my life waiting on a pager to go off or a cell phone to ring either.   I was truly a slave, much like a wife who's husband beats her........We all wonder why they stay.......but it takes a lot of courage to leave........or was that stupidity?

WHO KNOWS?  Not me!

Yeah, I carry it fishing.
About a month ago, I went on a solo trip to St. Mary's river on south Georgia coast.
Never been fishing on such a big river that leads out to the ocean.
Anyways time got away as the fishing for red drum was good and next thing I know I'm stuck in a inlet during low tide late in the pm.
I couldnt go back the way I came to this point so I had to cell phone the  state park( who directed me to the little known spot) for help getting out.
Without the phone, I'd have had to spend the night on my jonboat until the next tide came in.
Will continue to carry it whenever I go in the outdoors.

I carry mine, turned off fishing.  I bought a wide mouthed Nalgene bottle, bright yellow, and stow the phone inside, along with a flashlight and my truck keys.  That way if my canoe flips and I go in the drink, the Nalgene bottle will float, I can find it and at least get home.  If it keeps water in, conversly it will keep water out.  Works great.

So yesterday, we were out shooting, and I saw something absolutely rediculous.  My friend had broken the screen on his cellphone, and decided to shoot at it.  He knicked it with a 7.62 round on the edge, then hit it with 7 shot with about three pellets.  When he went to check on it, he got a call, and it worked!!!  After the call.. he was messing with it,, and lead shot fell out!  Now that is one tough phone.

Yeah, I lost a cell phone twice now.  First time was in about 20ft of water, second one off a pier.  Went down to the bottom, and I ended up swimming down to get it.  The SIM card was still good, thank God - I'm not in the mood to put up with that again.

I got a new cell that take photos and video. This works great for fishing photos and then show and tell at the office.  I also take mine hunting to but keep it on vibrate 100% of the time.

If you were ever around an emergency command center  you would carry your cellphone.  Because there are a lot of things happening out on the water.  When I go fishing I have my cellphone in my boat.  It is turned off.  And there is only cellphone coverage on twenty-five percent of the lake I spend most of my fishing time on.  But I know that within twenty minutes I can be making a 911 call.  I consider this a better option then making a call two hours later.

Many of you are a bunch of old guys, when go out fishing in the middle of the week the other two or three boats on the lake are carrying people who have been retired for sometime.  During the year a helicopter is sent to the boat ramp a number of times to fly heart attack patients to the hospital a hundred miles away.

Then as you get closer to the weekend boating and water skiing accidents are more common.  And how many times have you been fishing a point and a drunk in a ski boat comes around the corner at high speed 75 feet from the shoreline.  Then there are those who run around on Jet Ski’s.  A lot of unsafe operators out there to disturb my day.

Vehicles at boat ramps have been broken into and had property stolen and some vehicles have been taken.  Many of these crimes have been traced back to communities fifty to one hundred miles away.

You can have your cellphone with you without having it on.   It’s a little like a LEO carrying a sidearm.  He may not need it every day but when he needs it he does not have time to run home and get it.

As my hunting and fishing partners and I grow older family and friends are starting to treat us like kids.  They are concerned about something happening to us while we are out in the woods.  Normally are days in the woods start before daylight and it is after dark when we get in.  If we drive back to town it might 2100 or 2200 hours before we reach home.  Rather then have love ones fret about us when we find a location that there is a cellphone signal we will give a call.  The call sure saves a lot of concern on their part.  Nothing like being treated like a teenager.  Now to feel young again.

Cell phones are also effective in reporting dangerous and or criminal activity. Like the dumb ass jet ski guy jumping wakes behind boats, like my boat while towing my daughter and her friend in a tube. The next boat wake he jumped was the local DNR agent. The problem took care of it self that time. I did not have my cell on that day but wished I did.
