My double is coming along fine, it is regulated now and I just finished shaping permeant the forearm.    The stock is shaped from a Black Thorn stock blank I was given by a custom gunsmith in South Africa on my 2001 trip.    The wood did not look like much until I got some finish on it.    Now I will check the regulation one more time and then I have to do the rust bluing.    If this comes out it is a picture of the rifle ready to do the initial regulation at this time there is no finish on the stock.    The rifle is chambered for the .450#2 NE and is believe it or not very pleasant to shoot.

I think the metal is still in the white by Judson's post.

The planned rust bluing should be a fine addition to an already fine looking rifle. I love the splinter forend. And the grain... :agree:

In the picture the rifle is in the white and I am working on regulating it.   The barrels and other fittings will be rust blued and the action I may color case  or leave as is.    The action was originally color case hardened but it has now faded and worn off.    The action was made in the late 40s or early 50s)   Which do you people think would look best?    The forearm in the picture is the original which I used for regulating and since the photo I have made a new one from the piece of wood shown.   It is a bit wider then the old one as it is nice to have something to hold on to.    I will try for another picture of me shooting the gun during the regulating process.


    As you can see the recoil is not that bad, rather a push, the rifle was resting on the bags prior to the shot.

Fine looking rifle no matter how you finish it Judson.

Deep blue on the barrels and case color on the action with fire blued pins...

Leave it in the white and let itage..Nah, deserves better than that.
The options are limited to your imagination and resources, just give'er. Whatever strikes your fancy. (just don't hide that pretty wood)

I thought you might get a kick out seeing what the wood looked like in the blank form so I will try to post a picture of it.    In the picture the blank was wetted down with mineral spirits so the grain would show.


   I have some more pictures of this gun being built but have to get them developed, if you would like I will post them when I get them back.

  Hay!! Did I ever show you people what this thing shoots?    The little guy is a .243.

Gee, I guess I should have read your post a little closer! :oops: I think I was gawking at the rifle stock too much to read well at the time. Anyway, cool piece, please post a picture when you get her finished.

I've always dreamed of owning a double, large caliber rifle. What action did you use and did you just buy two barrels fit them into a mono block and solder them together, did you or some sort of adjustable clamps to regulate the barrels?

Great work! I like the splinter forearm for looks. Most guys grab a double around the barrels anyway. I think a nice bone charcoal case color is in order for the reciever! Did you rest the gun, or your left hand on the bags? I ask because I have seen old pictures of Brits resting their elbows on a high bench when regulating, to better simulate offhand recoil. It is possible that shooting off bags would not let the gun recoil the same.

Well the double is finally rust blued and it did not come out as well as I hoped so I am getting fresh rust blue solution and will try again.     I mean it looks good but not perfect thanks to some missed solder, which will not blue.     So we clean up the spots and go at it again.    
    I met one of you at the Augusta gun show and thank you for stopping, I am sorry I did not get your name but things were rather hectic at the time, I wish I had more time to talk and had found out who you were.    I appreciate your interest in my work and apologize for not giving you a proper introduction!

My double rifle is based on a french 16 ga action.    The mono block is one piece of steel and quite a machining feat so I reused this.    The quarter rib, sights, scope bases and safety I had to make.    The original safety could have been used but was a bit small for the work this rifle is intended for.    After all you do not want to fumble for the safety when a 1500 pound buff has you in his sights which is what I hope for in 2007.
  I have now rust blued the rifle and will probably re blue the rifle as the old solution did not do as good a job as I hoped!    The bluing is nice, but not up to my standards!!     It may be my rifle but it is an example of my work, and no gun leaves my shop unless the customer and I am proud of the results!!!!
