MOVING TO NEW YORK?
« Reply #30 on: September 21, 2005, 04:29:27 PM »
Basic;
Cost of living, other than taxes, is quite reasonable and the rural areas have much to offer the outdoor sportsman.
I live in a rural area in far western NY..Cattaraugus county runs along the Pa border and is next to the last county on the westward end.
The rural folks in western NY are from a farming heritage and are much like the midwestern farm folk..friendly, generally mind their busines but there to help if needed..
The taxes are high on any given home...but the home can be bought cheaper here than most anywhere in the country..
If you pay 60 to 80 k for a very nice home...the taxes per thousand will be higher than many other places (where that same house may cost 120 to 150 K..

Stands to reason though...the crying need is jobs..jobs with decent pay.
Your EMT skills would be appreciated here...but not for pay..all these small towns are VOLUNTEER fire companies..efficient, and good at what they do, but still volunteer.
As a small landscaper you could probably make it fairly well in the suburbs, say about 15-20 miles from major city centers..

Snow removal ..plenty of it, just take a map and draw shading SSE of the Lakes Erie and Ontario for about 30 to 40 miles inland..that is roughly, the "snow belt"area..
Of course trucking is a popular job around here, since one doesn't have to live at or near the sources of production...

   Hope that helps..
If you don't want the truth, don't ask me.  If you want something sugar coated...go eat a donut !  (anon)

Basic

We lived in Woodstock, NY (not far from shooter) from 1979-1990.  My company was going out of business so I left for another job.  I grew up in Washington, NJ and over the course of my 30 yrs of married life, have lived in MD, NY, PA, IN, and now IL.

Upstate NY was our favorite.  Check out the Woodstock area.  The Catskills are beautiful and you have deer and bear hunting available on state owned land.  I was a member of two gun clubs, Highwoods Sportsmens and Saugerties.   Check out Kenneth Wilson state park, we used to camp there frequently.

I used to work at National Micronetics in Kingston.  Some fellows I worked with now work at IBM.

Shooter,
Don't know Bob Sickler, I was in the materials dept from '79-90.  I worked with a Bob Sturrock and a Kevin Schramm who both went to IBM. On your way bear hunting, do you pass a meadow along 212 with a bunch of rock formations near the Shady firehouse?  The fellow doing the work there is a friend of my mother-in-law. He's a retired school teacher name Nick Dellapena.  He moved to Woodstock from LI.
I was very active in the Highwoods club in the mid 80's.   Do you know an Art Sperl?   He has an archery shop in Saugerties and is still a member in Highwoods.  We miss that area.
Only bear I ever saw and shot at  while hunting was up Hutchin Hill Rd.
I missed!!

Greg,
Yup,know the area you're talking about.I hunt up across from Lake hill post office on public land..on Mink Hollow rd.
As far as Art Sperl goes, yes i knew of him from the club.He might have even been my garbage man when i live in Saugerties. The Sperls run or did run a garbage pick-up biz up there.I didnt buddy around alot with any of the guys, just used to shoot archery a bit there around 1984-89.How about Fred Gentile,he was a traditional archer who made his own equipment and shot there ? Right now i have my trail camera out trying to capture some bear pics,so far-nothing but does.

If you are looking for an EMT job, give Rural Metro ambulance service a call.  They are a large organization, and do have headquarters in Syracuse and Rochester, as well as other areas.  If you don't mind a 30 minute commute, you could find a decent rural home near either city.  And the snow removal guys up here get plenty of jobs...can you spell LAKE EFFECT?
Good deer hunting, especially in Wayne County, which is between Syracuse and Rochester.

ps, let me know, I know a bunch of medics in Syracuse, as I am a LEO there.

Thanks for all the help.I've heard a great deal about high NY taxes(no higher than in NJ and maybe even lower)but also that in some parts of the state property/houses can be bought for fairly low prices, does that offset the taxes and are the areas with cheaper housing the areas with less employment. If not NY where would you recommend?

As mentioned before, you can find good houses for a really good prices in the more rural areas. If you get a place with some land and it has good hardwoods on it you can cut, split and burn wood for your heat and even your hot water if it has the right system. New York's energy costs are just as high as our taxes, burning wood helps a lot. I live in the city and burn four or five face cords a winter. Just stay away from the cities and especially the "new phase".......suburban areas, they can be more expensive then the cities.
