Author Topic: More on the Stevens 200 (Read 1848 times)

I've been seeing a lot of posts wanting info on these rifles. Let me say this, they're the exact same gun as the Savage without the AccuTrigger. They should shoot the same. I have, (had) one in .308, that shot under an inch right out of the box. I bought the gun to make a project gun out of it. Sold the barrel and am awaiting a 7mm-08 barrel. All the parts interchange so there is no reason to think that they won't shoot the same. In fact I'm using the Stevens bolt in my stainless Savage 16 action that I converted from .204 to 260 Rem, and it shoots very well indeed.

You are right about the Stevens 200, I have one in .223. I put a sharp shooter trigger in it. Dime size groups off the bench are common place once I found my load it liked and I do my part. I like this rifle and I am keeping it.

I see in the recent issue of Outdoor Life they gave the Stevens 200 one of it's highest overall ratings ever. They consider value and quality when rating a new gun.

I've been trying to get a price on one at the local Walmart, but they can't find it in their books. It seems I've seen posting in which guys have bought them through Walmart. Does anyone have any specific info on ordering one through them?

The WalMart retail is $268. I think that we get them from Gene Sears. When I called Friday they had stock on most. I can't decide on .223 or 25/06.

The newest WalMart Special Order catalogs got to the stores last week. Just ask for the special order book or tell me what you want to find out.

I just ordered a new stevens in 7mm-08 today. Hoping it will be in by monday. Price is $289.00 from my local FFL. He is very competitive with walmart. In fact he is only about 200 yards from walmart.

My stevens 25.06 is very accurate. The book at my Walmart store did not have any stevens. I asked them to call the distributor, sure enough had several in stock($268). I started to buy a kimber montana earlier this year but changed my mind. I thought heck, I can have 4 Stevens for the price of the Montana. I know they are not the same. This 25.06 has already shot some 1/2 inch or better groups. I fired a 10 shot group that averaged right at an inch. If that is not accurate enough I think I will give it up. :wink:

I have two, a 25-06 and a 7mm-08, thinking about a 223 and a 243 too. So far, mine both shoot less than MOA. Need trigger work or SSS triggers though. I paid $262 out the door.

My Walmart just can't seem to come up a listing. I'll see if they'll call their supplier. That's a good idea. I'm really looking forward to trying one of these guns out. There's no one else in my area that peddles Savage rifles, so I'll keep working with Walmart.

I know the feeling. Walmart kind of sucks to buy a gun from. I would not mess with them if it was not for the price. I special ordered mine and with all the B.S. it took me 45 minutes to get escorted to the door. Lipsy's is one of the distributors for walmart here in Missouri. Make them call for you and earn their money.

that is why I ordered mine from the local dealer for $20 dollars higher. Had it ordered in 3 mins and had the gun in my hands 2 days later. He even threw me in a real nice camo turkey hat for free. Going to shoot the 7mm-08 tomorrow. I have a nikon on it with burris rings. If it shoots as good as my 7mm mag Savage I will be a happy camper. I can get .5 MOA out of it if I do my part. The whole thing counting Nikon, burris rings and bases and Stevens was $512 out the door with tax.

I just looked in their new order book and they do list the stevens in them for $269.00. A whole 20 dollars cheaper than I paid for mine. But I got the rings, bases and the scope installed for free plus boresided for nothing.

I went to WalMarts today and ordered a Stevens 200 in .223 out of the book. It's supposed to take ten days for delivery.

I wanted a .223 for a few years already, the Stevens 200 got me to make the move to get one.

That special order catalog that WalMarts has is very interesting. The Manager told me that firearms in the catalog aren't usually stocked on the shelves in the stores since there are so many and he doesn't believe the Stevens 200's will be on the shelves later in the year.

It doesn't normally take too much work to lighten a trigger to 2 1/2 or 3 pounds. As for optics, it wouldn't matter if it was a Stevens or something more expensive. The cost for optics would be the same.

Where the Stevens wins is that they come free floated and dual pilar bedded from the factory. Just doing that at a gunsmith or by yourself makes buying one already set up more than worth it.

The only thing I see wrong with the Savage/Stevens/Mossburg combined brands is that they have the other manufacturers at a disatvantage with prices on rifles. That conglomerate is so immense that finding out what part of the world their parts are made is near impossible.

jvs...I don't think you read my question real good (that's OK), so here goes again. After spending "X" amount on the trigger job, and then buying rings and bases (not optics), how much would you have in it?

Rifle $285
rings/bases $75?
trigger work $50?
$400 or so does the trick?

I gotcha now.

I didn't price the rings or bases as yet but they shouldn't run any more than any other Savage set up. Since I don't own any of the newer Savages' I don't know how much they are, but I doubt they would exceed $50 depending on who made them.

As far as the Scope goes, I haven't decided yet what I will put on it. I have always put a mid-level scope on my rifles, staying away from the cheapest and the most expensive, which puts me in the Leupold, Nikon, Bausch market.

I have always heard it's alot better to put a good Scope on a cheap rifle, than a cheap scope on an expensive rifle, so it is quite possible that the scope and rings would cost as much or more than the rifle does.

As far as the trigger job.....if you can't do it yourself, a gunsmith in my area would get between $40 and $75 to lighten the pull, including test firing it. More to have a new trigger installed.

That would bring the total to between $625 and $675 for me.

I can see it done for under $475... all taxes, rings and mounts, a cheap scope, a box or two of ammo, targets, sling mounts and sling included.

Well I finally shot the 7mm-08 stevens today. The trigger was terrible. I only got 3 inch groups out of it at first. So I took the stock off and trigger plate and adgisted the trigger spring down to where it was about 3.5 pounds. boy did that make a difference. It went down to about .75 MOA immediately. Mine was not totally free floated. it was a little close on the right hand side. I just took a little sandpaper and sanded down that side
to where I could take a dollar bill and slider her all the way down with out touching. I like the nikon scope and burris rings I put on it. All together counting scope, rings and gun I have $512.00 in it with tax.

how did you adjust the trigger on ur Stevens 200?

I took the stock, and trigger guard off then I adjusted the front screw down to where it was acceptable. If you look you will see a set screw with a spring wire on top. once you are done put loctite back on it.

Thanks for the info on the stevens rifles. I feel the need for a 243 win in a stevens rifle. I like expensive rifles but I like rifles that shoot well and are inexpensive much better. If the rifle is a keepsake or something special that you have wanted for years I can understand the willingnes to pay a higher price. But for me guns are tools that I use to get a job done. I do however have two rifles that I drool over. I will have them befor I die. One is the ruger #1 international in 243 winchester. The other is the remington custom shop manlicher style rifle in 243 winchester. But I am glad to see the price comming down for good usable hunting guns.

Check with Walmart again,I was in there yesterday (4-26-06)and they had a Stevens 200 book.Not much for selections.Got my Stevens 200 in
7-08 at GanderMountain $256 otd.And it shoots really nice.I dont care
for the looks.(synthetic stock)
