AR Varmiter???
« on: May 19, 2005, 01:40:24 PM »
I was wondering if anybody is going to be bringing an AR type rifle.

I've shot one at the range the last couple of weeks from a friend of mine. It's a Bushmaster Varmiter w/ a 24 inch barrel and the accuracy is remarkable. 223 caliber w/ a 1 in 9 inch twist. All he has on it is a Burris Compact 3X9. This has really caught my eye, even though I've always disliked the M-16 style rifle. I could consistently hit a 3 inch piece of bar stock steel at 100yds. with it and the scope was only on 3 power.
What do ya'll think.

Deadeye;

I was thinking about it. But the price seemed a little steep. $1100.00 for it.    It comes with a flat top and mounting slots also risers. I can't see spending that much for a varmit rifle, although it's a hoot to shoot. I've been looking for two months for another rifle for PD's and the 223 caliber. Have went to as many gun shops as I know of and still haven't found anything that I really want.
May just bring what I have, an Ultra Varmit in .223 and a Remington Model 7FS in 7mm-08 w/ a 18-1/2 inch barrel.
I just don't know.  :?

Now Dennis I dunno how to break this to ya but hitting a 3" target at 100 yards is no great feat. A half way decent shot can do that with iron sights. That ain't gonna kill many prairie dogs since they are barely 3" wide if that.

You need to pick you up one of those super highly modified Handi's like mine. Steve still has three of them in stock I think. Got the nice gray laminated stock, super tuned trigger, heavy barrel and all the goodies. Still a single shot and runs $700 not $1700.

Actually..1100 ain't that bad a price( does it come with the scope?) ...a flat top 24"match upper is nearly the cost of Bills rifle!!   The riser might be an add on and they don't give anything away on those rifles......is the 24" upper on the rifle actually a Bushmaster??? I guessing but it may have the 2 stage trigger on it too...I hate um...long creepy pull and then a break??? right? I put a Jard single stage trigger on mine that is adjustable for break and it is sweeeeeet!!! Just a touch and boom!  8) Very conducive to small groups...Bill's right though....I'm interested to see how his Super-Duper-Modified Handi shoots myself!!

I have a Colt accurized with a 24" stainless bull barrel that is my primary coyote rig.  It carries a Springfield 4-16X56MM mil dot scope on it, and it is an accurate son of a gun.

They are very addicting, and my next one will be a D Tech, upper in .243WSSM with a 20" SUM barrel.

I'll have my AR out there, so you'll be able to look at it if you want.

Deadeye, you should bring your carbine.  I'd like to handle it.

8) Sweet!! That sounds like a nice rig!! I'd love too check it out...been thinkin of getting a 24 inch upper for mine too....Just never seem to have enough money for all the toys though  .....Ok ..I'll bring mine too...actually I went to the range today and may not be taking my 225 Winchester...I changed the scope and loaded up some tried and true ammo for it and I'm a little dissapointed by the accuracy I got out of it today...I shot it after putting a bunch of  rounds thru a 308 bolt action and I just may have been a little recoil shy after that... ...who knows ...but ... will bring the AR instead.... The 223 Ultra was shooting good today though  I think I'm ready...got plenty of ammo for it. I'm gettin excited here!!! :D

Well, went to the gun shop where it was at. Waited in line to talk to the fella I usually talk to. When I got to him he said that the gun he was holding for me was less than he had quoted. I was gonna tell him that $1100.00 was just to steep, but before I had a chance to speak he said that the gun was $1015.00, tax and all. Someone had miss priced all the Bushmasters. Anyway I told him that I would buy it for $1000.00 and he was to add a 20rnd. mag and some cartridges. He said he would.
So.... I now have a Bushmaster Varminter, 1 in 9 inch twist, full length fluted barrel, the whole nine yards.
It's a regular production rifle, it's on page 14 of their 2005 catalog.
Hope to pop a lot of PD's with it.

Yup mitchell;

Have a Sightron 2.5X8X42mm scope to put on it and had two sets of new Warne rings, medium and high still in the box. Was gonna use them when the Handi came back with a 7.62X39 barrel if you remember back in Feb. or Jan. But when they told me the barrels would not be available till July, told them to send the reciever back. Working on which hight to use and if I'm gonna be using the risers or not.
One strange thing is the Bushmaster came with a 5 round mag. to comply with state hunting regulations for hunting purposes.
Man... one thing is how they say to go about breaking in the barrel. Clean thourghly, Use JB bore paste with the worn brush and a patch. Then shoot 20rnds. repete same process, remove all copper fouling and shoot 20 more rnds. Do this for a total of 120 rounds. Then your rifle should be ready to go. Wow... worse than trying to get a Handi rifle barrel ready.

Well... Shot the first 20 rnds on Sunday at the range. Took only 4 shots to get the gun zeroed with the Sightron scope at the 50 yd line. Shot two five shot groups at the 50, very impressive using the PMC 55gr. FMJ/BT's.
That's what the guy at the gun shop gave me.
So I went to the 100yd. line. Have 5 shots left. So I'm not gonna make no scope adjustments. Just aim at the center for the last 5 rnds.
Shot all five, went down range to see the group. WOW! 3 holes touching and two slightly right. Came home and measured the group with calipers. 1.275 inches, outer edge to outer edge. Man this rifle is a shooter. And I still have to break in the barrel with the JB bore paste and copper solvent.
But if this is what it takes, I'll sure be glad to spend the time.
It just amazes me that it shot so well with $4.00/ box ammo.
Now the work begins.

Yep, he's hooked.

One thing you should know......You're going to burn up three times as much ammo shooting that AR as you would with a single shot.  AND, you'll recover half as much brass :?

Fellas, I'm not gonna "Spray and Pray" promise.  :-)

Just ordered another 5 round mag yesterday. And that's all, just two five rounders is all I'm bringing. Also ordered a Chamber Checker Flag for when the rifle is empty.
But yea, I'm hooked, can't deny it.

 :-D  :-D  :-D  Ain't that the truth!!

I mounted the scope back on my carbine this afternoon...glad I did cause I tried to charge it and the charging handle was hitting the lock ring on the new collapsable stock! :x  Glad I noticed it here and not on the firing line there!!  I drimmeled it down a little and back in business. ..half way tempted to put the solid stock back on for this shoot but ...Oh well...I haven't shot it with the collapsable and forward grip on it yet...

I've been thinking about putting a collapsible stock on mine, but I'm afraid it will throw off the balance of the rifle with that 24" tube on it.

If I ever get around to dropping the $950.00 that D-Tech wants for their .243WSSM upper, I will buy one of their skeletonized buttstocks.

Well...I'll let ya shoot this first and then you can decide...I got an inexpensive aftermarket polymer collapsible....it does change the balance a little but not bad on a carbine...the cheek weld on it definitely feels different...I may try and go to the range to see if the scope is still close to being on before i get up there....950 for an upper....and I thought a varmint upper was expensive!!

Yeah, but they're worth every penny.

The upper I want in .243WWM starts at $732.00.  But I want a few add-ons.

$732.00 will get you a custom upper chambered in any of the WSSM calibers, with a 18" or 24" Stainless Ultra Match barrel, free floated floated aluminum hand guard, and a Picatinny gas block rail.

I want:

Fluted Barrel-  $80.00
Integral Compensator- $100.00
Extra Mag- $35.00

Here is a link to his page if you want to browse:

I'm sure it it will be a blaster alright..those WSSM calibers have really become popular reciently. I've never shot one but have looked at a few guys bolt rigs at the range..they shoot nice.....ought to be sweet in an AR especially in an auto set up..less recoil than a bolt gun!!

thanks for the link...jeeze that bolt looks almost twice the size of the 223... ... :D    Can't wait to see you and Dennis's set up...
