New slug barrel
« on: May 15, 2005, 02:45:29 PM »
I got out to the range and shot a new fully rifled slug barrel on my 11/87 today. I tried five different slugs.

Rem 2 3/4" Copper Solids
Rem 3" Copper Solids
Federal 2 3/4" Hydra Shoks
Winchester 3" Partition Gold
Lightfield 2 3/4" Hybreds

The winner was the Rem 2 3/4" Copper Solids. Groups ran around 3" from a bench at 50 yards with TruGlo open sights. Recoil was stiff, but not bad. Worst were the Win 3" Partition Gold, and the Lightfields. Groups ran about 8" at 50 yards. The 3" loads are out for me. Too much recoil. Gave me a bad case of flinch real quick. The Federals grouped nice also, but between them and the Rems, I'd rather shoot the Copper Solids. I shot both into an old piece of Kevlar, and the expansion was impressive to say the least. The Rem remained fully intact. No little pieces laying around. The Federal Hydra Shok literally exploded in the Kevlar.

I was very pleased with the overall outcome. The TruGlo sights are great, but I wish they were made of steel. They are plastic, and I'm not sure how well they'll hold up to the bumps and bangs of hunting. Time will tell. Now I know which ammo to stock up on for the upcoming season.

daddywpb: I have ben experimenting with rifled slugs for a couple of years so far. I think I have tried every brand made including some home cast ie. Lee and Lymans.
I found that the Rem copper solids seem to shoot very well in my 2 test guns. I use a Rem 870 and a Ithaca Deerslayer II both scoped with a 1.5 to 5X.
I found that the Hornady slugs did well too. sometimes I would get a flyer out of a 5 shot group but that could have just have been just me too. After a while the slug shooting does force a "slight" flinch at times.
I had some better luck with the Lightfields than you, finding I could hold 3.5 to 5" at 100 in my guns. I also found that the Federal w/ Barnes seemed to shoot well. I guess that is also an important point,, all guns are somewhat different and a rule unto themselves.
