I was toying with the idea of getting one awhile back in 20 ga cuz my dealer just couldn't seem to come up with the Browning 20 I wanted. I did a bunch of looking around and found that on the Bennili site they have a Stoeger Forum and there is a LOT of discussion there on them. Most folks like them pretty well and seemed to think they are an excellent buy for the money. BUT be aware that they have a real problem with the barrel selector not wanting to allow them to fire the second shot. One of the regulars on the Stoeger Forum has come up with an easy fix you can do yourself IF yours has the problem.

Seems Stoeger/Bennellit customer service leaves a LOT to be desired. Check out the forums there at:

http://www.benelliusa.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi

Since my dealer got the Browning I wanted I backed out on getting one and haven't been back to the site lately.

Great reference GB.

I'm trying to recall the last time I had a site administrator direct me to another forum....    That's just one of the many things I appreciate about this forum.  Class act.

jphelps - shotgunworld.com also has a TON of info on this.  IMHO, the Stoger is what it is...  Yes, they're a bit bulky, and the fit/finish has some flaws.  But, they're built pretty solid.  With rare exception, you get what you pay for.  That's not to say that they're a bad gun.  By all means, they will meet most needs.

I'm a little old school when it comes to doubles though.  Part of what I love about a double gun is the precision tollerances, the beautiful fit/finish, the balance, the "feel."  That's part of the allure of a double gun.  IMHO, you don't get that when you pick up some of the Russian, Turkish, or Brazilian guns.  Then again, I'm most definately biased - hey, at least I can admit it   .

I've given it a lot of thought, and if it was me, I'd go with a Nova over one of these guns.  You won't be into a Nova for much (if any) more than you'll have to put into that Condor Supreme.  If you're dead set on a double gun, save a little more money and get one that really represents the class....

NimrodRx, Hmm, have you held one of the Condors? I haven't so really have nothing more to go on that the photos. I suspect tho like you say they might not have the "feel" many look for. My Stoeger Uplander isn't bad but it's not got that feel of a quality SxS either.

But your comment about Turkish guns has me wondering. Which brand names are you referring to? Right now they are turning out some exquisite guns for not a lot of money in Turkey. The Huglu's sure seem nice. I've held those but not shot them and have heard from several others who have shot them. They have the "feel" you look for in a nice double to me. Slim, trim and excellent quality of workmanship. I'm still waiting on a price to decide but I'll likely have a SxS .410 and a 28 O/U both. The little .410 SxS I've held felt very much like an English double in my hands.

Remember GB, I admitted right up front - I'm biased  :-D  :-D .

I actually took a good hard look at a 12 ga Condor Supreme once.  Came close to taking it home with me.  Probably should have, the price was certainly right.  It just didn't do it for me.  It was just a little "rough."  Double guns are almost romantic for me.  I just don't get that from some of these utility doubles.  Again, I'm biased.

Why Remington put their name one the Spartan still baffels me.  I have yet to pick up a Russian gun that does anything for me.  I'm sure those Baikals will last a life-time, but, well........

That being said, I do get it from some of the classic American doubles.  I have a 20 ga Lafever SxS that strikes me as one of the most solid actions I've ever handled.  Mechanically, it's as sound today as it was 50 yrs ago.  I also love Foxes.  Amazing combination of art and mechanics.  I think if I had to have a one double gun, some variation of a Fox would be it.

You mentioned the Huglus.  I'll say one thing for that line - Turkish wallnut is beautiful and Huglu seems to find a fair amount of it.  I'm real excited to see what CZ does with this line.  I've never been big on the Dehaans.  All that engraving really turned me off.  Seemed more like engraving just for the sake of engraving - it that makes sense...

The CZ line of Huglus have my attention though.  Nice looking guns.  I've yet to handle one though.  My buddy is dying for one of their Ringneck 20 gauge.  I really hope he gets it.  He's just waiting to sock some more money away and find one near by.  I think it will be a great gun for him.  One of my concers though is the stiffness of the action.  Everyone always comments on how they loosen up and opperate real nice after a break in period.  That's always concerned me.  If 200 rounds "break them in" what will 20,000 rounds do?  Will these guns last?  I guess that's my biggest question.  Then again, for the price, you could go out an buy another.  Another consideration is that these are mostly field guns.  It's highly unlikely that anyone is going to put that number of rounds through a field gun.

Two weeks ago, I pulled out my father-in-laws old Nikko Shadow to shoot trap.  He bought the gun in the early 70's and shot it A LOT for 3 decades.  I put 750 rounds through it in 3 days, and I can honestly say that every time I closed the action, I smiled.   :-)   Who knows, maybe the Huglus will hold up like that, time will tell.  If they do, they're a bargain.

NimrodRx an Graybeard,

I was reading the posts that you made an thought I'd stick my $.02 worth in.
First off,  I'm used to shooting Beretta's, Browning's an Franchi's, so I like good guns the same as everybody else. I have 10 of them.
I have been looking for a .410 O&U to sorta round out my collection. Ran across a CZ Redhead in .410 with 28" barrels. I thought , what the heck, I'll check it out.
I'll have to say I was impressed with this little Turkish made gun. Made on a .410 frame, good metal to wood fit, good wood, not beautiful wood but good. Machining on the metal parts is good. Black chrome barrels with a coin finished receiver. Extractors, not ejectors. 28" barrels, fixed chokes IC an M. Weighs a little over 6 lbs.
I'll be the first to say, its not a Beretta or Browning, but for $630.00 I'm very pleased with this gun.
Oh, by the way, the last 2 rounds of skeet I shot with it were a 20 an 20. Not the gun faults by any means.

CZ O&U's

Wallingdad,

I found mine at a gunstore called Mace Sports in Mebane, N.C. (also a Beretta dealer)
I live about 50 miles away from there so I go quite often. They have sold out of all their 28's an .410's in the Woodcocks an Redheads.
I probably know at least 10 people that want one an can't find one around here.
Mace Sports said they didn't know when they'll get anymore in, they're on order.
Ed's Gun Shop in Vass, N.C. also carries the CZ line. All he has right now are the Bobwhites an Ringnecks. Ed's has a website an will ship online.
