Well, I think I set a personal record for longest time between purchasing a firearm and finally getting to shoot it (6 weeks!) but I did make it to the range yesterday with my new SPS in 7mm-08. I fired 75 rounds, all handloads using Bl-C(2), mainly 'cause I got lots of it and I was primarily just breaking the gun in rather than going for ultimate accuracy. Bullets used were Rem. 140gr Core-Locts and Hornady 140gr SP. Accuracy with either bullet was very consistent, running around 1.5 to 1.75 inches at 100m. Not outstanding, but like I said, I wasn't doing load developement. At least the rifle shows good potential and isn't all that bad as is.
The bolt smoothed up considerably by the time I was done. I wish I could say the same for the feeding of rounds from the magazine. This rifle has the strongest magazine spring I've ever encountered. It made loading the magazine difficult and I had problems getting the rounds inserted so that they sat in the mag properly. As a result, I experienced several failures to feed and misfeeds. Obviously, this is not good for a hunting rifle.
The trigger was about average for an out of the box, lawyer-approved type. It was heavy but with very little creep. Needs a little work.
Overall, I was pleased with the rifle. I'm quite sure a little careful load developement will produce some minute of angle or less groups. But the magazine definitely needs work.
