M700 SPS Range Report
« on: May 10, 2005, 04:20:48 AM »
Well, I think I set a personal record for longest time between purchasing a firearm and finally getting to shoot it (6 weeks!) but I did make it to the range yesterday with my new SPS in 7mm-08.  I fired 75 rounds, all handloads using Bl-C(2), mainly 'cause I got lots of it and I was primarily just breaking the gun in rather than going for ultimate accuracy.  Bullets used were Rem. 140gr Core-Locts and Hornady 140gr SP.  Accuracy with either bullet was very consistent, running around 1.5 to 1.75 inches at 100m.  Not outstanding, but like I said, I wasn't doing load developement.  At least the rifle shows good potential and isn't all that bad as is.

The bolt smoothed up considerably by the time I was done.  I wish I could say the same for the feeding of rounds from the magazine.  This rifle has the strongest magazine spring I've ever encountered.  It made loading the magazine difficult and I had problems getting the rounds inserted so that they sat in the mag properly.  As a result, I experienced several failures to feed and misfeeds.  Obviously, this is not good for a hunting rifle.

The trigger was about average for an out of the box, lawyer-approved type.  It was heavy but with very little creep.  Needs a little work.

Overall, I was pleased with the rifle.  I'm quite sure a little careful load developement will produce some minute of angle or less groups.  But the magazine definitely needs work.

Man, that's nothing.  I have about 5 or 6 NIB rifles that I have yet to shoot, and I have had some of them for about 2 years!

Come to think of it, it's really kinda sad

Zach, I would not say that is sad.  I would call that more of a crime.  You need to go shoot.  I like to burn some powder at least 2-3 weekends a month.  It makes me feel better come Monday when I get the customer in that you want to wring their neck for them. :-)

Absolutely.  Shooting is very theraputic.
I forgot to mention in my report that I the POI never shifted, even when I let the barrel get hot.  All in all, I'm pretty satisfied with this rifle.

Got to thinkin--

10 Rifles
3 Shotguns
3 Pistols

A couple pushing 2 years also----that haven't even been shot :(

Been working 2 jobs with a new baby and all---well not new anymore---she's 18 months now----so my time is spent workin---and with kids when not working-----while maintaining the funds to satisfy my gun addiction.

Anyway---glad to hear you're pleased with your new gun.

Edited to add: Upon further reflection---I need some trigger time--BAD-----got a new SKS and a case of ammo that are going to be taking a little trip out into the country come Sat afternoon

I think buying all those guns and not shooting them means you guys are working too hard. You deserve some range time. Making money is nice and all, but look, you can't even find time to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

Good coincidence here.  I just got my 7-08 Rem 700 SPS from Remington last week.  I bought some BLC-2 powder and the 139 Hornady SP.  What kind of load are you going to shoot?

My observations after shooting 20 of the cheap box Corelokts are:
1.  3rd round in magazine won't feed.  Must be a burr on the right side of the receiver somewhere.
2. Overspray of the "wonder coat" Remington finish into the muzzle, but that should be gone pretty quick.
3.  Nice fit of the stock to the action.  There was cosmoline or something all over the stock, haven't figured that one out unless they just spray the assembled gun before packing it up.

The butt ugly stock will go first, have Classic stock to for the SPS action.  Now I just have to wait for Leupold to fix my scope (yes, even Leupold's break).

Some people ask me if I'm a gun COLLECTOR, and I just tell them "Nope, I guess I'm just a gun ACCUMULATOR." :)

I have my new Kimber 8400 Montana in .300WSM that I received about a month ago.  I already have the scope mounts and two boxes of ammo and am just waiting for the scope to arrive from the optic zone which should arrive this week.  That way, I hope to take it out this weekend and give it a try.  I can't wait.
