Which brand and model would you choose in 308 caliber.  I am leaning towards Kimber for now,

Take a look at my post on the Kimber Review - Mixed Results.

Fit and finish on the Kimber is as good, if not better, than the Sako (and the Sakos are EXCELLENT).  I did have a problem with the bolt, but Kimber is taking care of it immediately, so at least I know that their customer service is second to none.

Sakos and Kimbers are both excellent rifles.  Kimbers are lightweight and only chambered in short action (or now WSM) cartridges, so if it's a lightweight .308 you're after, then I'd go with the Kimber.  If you like a heavier rifle, then go with the Sako.

Of course stock fit is also important.  So that also depends on your personal taste.

Hi Rick: I have a Kimber Montana in 308 and I am just thrilled with it. I have owned Brownings , savavges  and Remingtons but I truly prefer
the Kimber. Not only is it acuarate but it's extremely lite to carry plus the trigger distance from the pistol grip of the stock fits me perfectly. Also
I like how quick my eye lines up with the scope. I prefer a Leupold 2.5-8
and low rings on mine. I replaced the 2.5-8  with a 3.5-10 but decided to go back to the 2.5-8. The rifle has a slower twist rate so it does prefer lighter weight bullets such as 150 grain. I can't give any input on the Sako I never owned
one.

Both I and a buddy have the Sako in 308.  Mine is a 1995 and his is a 2004.  Both are very nice and are consistent 3/4" shooters.  The triggers are fantastic and easily adjustable without dropping the action.  Fit and finish is very good.  I have no experience, infact have never seen , a Kimber.  Like Zack said, it would be good if you could heft both of them to see which one feels best to you.  Personally I am not a "light" rifle fan a/c generally more felt recoil.  But to each his own.  Have fun deciding.

Rick,

Given Zachary's Kimber experience, and my experiences with
Tikkas, my next +$1000 rifle will be a Sako.  Although I am not
sure I can justify this cost, when I fondle my Tikkas, and shoot
them, at the bench.  I am not much for "pretty" firearms.  I once
traded a Beretta 20 ga. U/O, with gold in laid, in a velvet case, for
a Browning  Gold 10 ga. Stalker.  Not a good trade money wise, but a
great trade, hunting tool wise.

So, given that I don't care to admire guns, but rather hunt/shoot
guns, I would opt for a Tikka, and use the extra money to put
great optics on the rifle.  Then I would admire the itty bitty
groups, it shot.

Absolutely.  For the money, you just can't beat the quality and accuracy of a Tikka.  Plus, I think that they are actually sexy looking rifles. And you are right, with the money that you saved, you can get an equally high quality scope.
